Psychopaths? In a study just crying out for journalistic, if not academic, review, Victoria’s psychologists release a survey showing commerce students are more likely to display psychopathic tendencies. It’s the sort of story that will probably make the Science Media Centre sad. My key concerns are that the definition of psychopath isn’t made clear enough, and the distinction… Read Full Story.

Plumbing Stoush The Plumbing ITO and industry are going on the attack about training by providers – Unitec responded. It’s the renewal of a very long conflict that had seemed to die down, but maybe ITOs are getting sick of being the victim (BTW, could be more on ITOs being a victim today). Trout as Stoats In an absurd storey,… Read Full Story.

CE Not Renewed Paul Wilson, Tai Poutini Polytechnic CE, has apparently not had his contract renewed by his Council when it expires in January 2012. While it seems the Council has not yet made a final decision and they are “waiting for a response”, when the governing body’s initial offer is non-renewal, you don’t expect to turn that… Read Full Story.

ITO Review Steven Joyce has ordered a sweeping review of the ITO system, with the MOE to start it soon. He also referred to sale of quals and falsification of results as a new trend – hmm, maybe new to him, but I’ve heard about if for over a decade. Plumbing Stoush Garry Cruickshank, a former Unitec head… Read Full Story.

Aoraki’s Low Morale? The TEU is claiming low morale at Aoraki Polytechnic, although the CE denies it. Four outdoor education tutors have, however, all fallen sick at the start of the year, which looks odd. Maori Farming Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre continues to expand – first it went to Taranaki, then Hawkes Bay and now it’s up to… Read Full Story.

It’s a pity because Grant was just starting to get to grips with the area. Darren, who has never had a significant public role (he’s mainly had backroom jobs and was… Read Full Story.

Global Hair The Hairdressing ITO has awarded its first international certificates, after years of negotiation with overseas bodies. Job Cuts Otago Uni’s Foundation Studies Ltd might have lost more than six jobs this year as its EFTS are cut – this seems to be common and I don’t know whether TEC or unis are cutting the EFTS (or both). Seems silly in the absence of… Read Full Story.

Bad Press UC is getting some bad press about its notice to students of its Nelson teacher training campus closure. Laban Welcome Winne Laban, ex-MP, has been welcomed to her job at Victoria University. Quakes in Chch Under the Sea UC’s Mark Quigley had another sellout crowd in Chch for a lecture on geology – will we now see disasters caused by academics wanting similar crowds?. NIWA,… Read Full Story.

Quake Update Things are heading back to normal – CPIT has even put up some photos showing everything is normal. Staff are back at most big places today (UC on Wed) and many students are back too. Since things are getting back to normal, I will stop doing the roundup of news at each institution now and stick to… Read Full Story.

First Marketing on Completion Rates Lifeway College is the first provider to use its students’ completions as a marketing tool. They’re promoting a 93% qualification achievement rate according to “the official statistics submitted to the Tertiary Education Commission”, so I assume they’re talking about the soon to be published stats. I’d expect a lot more of this next… Read Full Story.
