I had a lovely day yesterday facilitating a TROQ planning session in the sport, recreation and fitness area – was great to catch up with such a wide cross-section of people from the sector.

Policy, Management & People

Self-Indulgent Education? A Stuff blogger is going back to study (after having 2 degrees already) and invites her readers to comment on whether she’s being self-indulgent. She gets a few of the costs wrong, suggesting that because she’s paid back her previous loans, it doesn’t matter, but fees (even under the original loan interest rates) only covered 20-30% of costs. Anyway, have a look if you’re keen.

New Tauranga Campus The new BOPP-Waikato-Awanuiarangi campus in Tauranga will have free use of 0.4 hectares from the Tauranga City Council. The group is also seeking $15m from the regional council and $15m from a local energy trust. That’s a lot of money, but it’s the sort of amount that other institutions pay for themselves. Good luck to the group in finding alternative funding.

Rowarth Move Waikato celebrates its appointment of Prof Jacqueline Rowarth (Waikato Times). She actually gets less coverage than she deserves in ED Blog because her NBR columns are usually behind a paywall..

Starpath Auckland’s Starpath project, which helps to improve school performance in Auckland is expanding to a wider group of schools.

TEC Employment Case Former TEC CFO Rochelle Leahy lost an ERA case over unjustifiable dismissal.

Extras: two new Waiariki managers – Rosemary Johnson and Greg Brimmer; Auckland’s Russell Snell supports Otago Uni’s new neurological chair; steel pou being installed at Massey Albany.

PNG Auckland’s Steven Ratuva comments on the PNG situation.

Aoraki’s Got Talent A new Aoraki student has done well at a talent competition. You can see the video and it’s a good song.

Teaching & Learning

Teach First Stuart Middleton has a thoughtful piece on Teach First – essentially he says it won’t solve the larger problems around curriculum structure facing secondary schools. There’s more from another blogger here. I think both tend to overstate Teach First’s claims, which are relatively modest, if you read them closely.

Science Comms Blogger Grant Jacobs opines on what should be in science communication courses.

CAM Teaching Blogger and Waikato academic Alison Campbell writes on whether universities should teach complementary and alternative medicines.

Extras: Massey’s Elizabeth Gray gets teaching award.

Policy & Management

Loan Scheme Loses Money TV3 did a story at the weekend disclosing how the interest-free student loan scheme would fail if it was a business, although it must be said that giving away money at no cost has never been seen as a winning business strategy. I’m happy it’s being highlighted but the treatment is a bit odd. Keith Ng at Public Address got grumpy about the story.

ACE Numbers The Press ran a story on the decline in ACE student numbers, seemingly just citing numbers from a representative of ACE-providing schools. The numbers are probably about right but I’d love to see what has really happened in that market and what people have done instead.

Otago Poly to Akld Otago Poly is setting up an Auckland campus to serve international students. They’re working with PTE Future Skills and plan to offer the first year of their business degree there.

TEC to Go? The TEC would be abolished if Tamaki independent candidate Stephen Berry has his way – he won’t, of course.

Transport Training Bay of Plenty Poly has a new transport training centre.

NZ Studies The 2009 closure of the UK-based Centre for NZ Studies made the news at the weekend as there was some controversy in the air. I’m not sure I care either way but it seems the accusations could either spell out corruption or a negotiated settlement, depending on how you look at it.

People Should Google AUT’s Alan Robie has been promoted to professor and the media release claimed that he might be the first journalism professor in NZ or the Pacific (there are heaps in Australia though).

King’s Education Push for an inquiry into the death of a King’s Education student in the Feb quake.

Extras: Otago Uni disability conference could lead to centre at Uni; WITT’s Richard Handley on youth unemployment (he’s misnamed in the report); decisions on Massey’s teacher education courses in new year; NZUSA likes the Maori Party tertiary education policy; discussion on IRL reforms (and again); Otago Uni’s advanced school science programme; Shane Telfer’s Fulbright; new Otago Uni neurosurgery lecturer.

Vanuatu Waikato’s Julie Barbour has a Marsden Grant to “complete the world’s first large-scale comparative study of “mood systems” in the Vanuatu languages” …

Climate Change Otago Uni and Victoria academics have reviewed the government’s work on climate change and found it came up short – blogger No Right Turn complains that the report is not available online.

Election A confused Unitec student is interviewed. Victoria’s Jon Johansson on the Epsom situation.
MMP Academics comment on MMP referendum: Massey’s Grant Duncan, Victoria’s Prof Nigel Roberts.
Steve Williams Unbelievably, two academics were found to comment on Steve William’s behaviour.

Blogging Victoria’s Danyl McLauchlan is one of NZ’s top bloggers (The Dim Post) and was profiled at the weekend. The Wanganui Chronicle has covered it (and a summer school story). I have to say that this review looks like a superb idea at first glance.

Agricultural Deal NorthTec and Taratahi have done a deal to deliver agricultural courses in Northland – “real training on real farms”.

Youth Wage National proposed a new start-out wage, which included coverage for those in industry training (TV3). Canterbury’s Eric Crampton commented (NewstalkZB)

ITPs to Manage Loans? RNZ covers an ITP proposal to manage student loans and allowances funds (and decide how they’re spent). Steven Joyce and the TEU thought it was interesting but NZUSA doesn’t like it. Meanwhile, the Mana Party is offering free education for all, but since they’ll only get about 1% of the vote, it’s unlikely to happen.

Otago VC Profile The ODT has written a profile of new Otago Uni VC Prof Harlene Hayne.

Fabulous Exhibition Massey’s 125th anniversary of its design roots (isn’t it great how a polytech gave them another 40 years of history!) is being celebrated with what looks like a fabulous exhibition in Wellington, from Sep 29.

Helping Canterbury The TEU is promoting other universities helping out Canterbury by not advertising in Christchurch – Auckland says that it’s not advertising in Canterbury this year. The TEU’s also started an email petition to help the University of Canterbury too.

RWC Massey’s Christoph Schumacher on economic benefits. Waikato’s Anna Kingsbury on enforcement of advertising-free zones. Rugby research by Victoria’s Marc Wilson.

Mind-Mapping Vic grad Ben Jack has created a cool brain-computer interface.

VSM Orientation is going to be more academic next year if the Uni gets its way, which it will. Whether people go to the academic events will be another challenge. The Scarfie Card in Dunedin also looks like a casualty of VSM and the local council’s financial problems, although I’d suggest it was always at risk with limited commercial income.

Doping Massey’s Steve Stannard commented on the SPARC doping scandal.

Orca Death A dead orca calf in Auckland was sent off to Massey for an autopsy and here’s more detail on Massey’s plans and the autopsy results.

High Fees Education at a Glance cherry-picking continues, with a series of stories in NZ having the 7th highest fees in the world (TV3, Yahoo, APNZ). Well, wouldn’t the fact that students getting a loan only pay half of the real costs of the fees have an impact on that ranking? Or would that be too complex to consider?

Christchurch Poaching? The TEU is calling on non-Christchurch universities not to poach students – apparently 3 are advertising there. What do you think? Is it poaching?

Fatter Kiwis Not the birds but us (me too)! Kiwis are getting fatter and Massey’s Jim Mann says it could be because we’re lazy and eating the wrong things, which may or may not have needed further study (RNZ, NZ Herald, NZ Herald again, NewstalkZB).

Uni Gifts Massey asked staff to gift them money via their salaries, which the TEU thought was wrong.

Asian Change Victoria’s Prof Robert Ayson has launched a report on changing power balances in Asia.

Dance MIT’s Cat Ruka, a dance teacher, is having NZ and international success with her dance.

Students Moan Students who barricaded themselves in Auckland Uni’s library basement are complaining about being arrested and accosted by security guards/Police when (a) their whole aim was to generate this media release and (b) barricading yourself (albeit poorly) in someone else’s place is not all that normal.

Acquisition A company that came out of Massey’s ecentre has been acquired by a US company in a multimillion dollar deal (Idealog). The company checks out pipes by sending a high-tech camera through them and analysing the results.

Open Plan Offices Victoria’s Stephen Cummings and Swedish colleagues have looked into open plan offices.

Fair Go An Aoraki student with cerebral palsy in Ashburton wants a fair go over work experience.

National Standards Waikato’s new education dean, Prof Roger Moltzen, comments on national standards – he’s not a fan.

King’s Education It’s a harrowing read, but the Coroner yesterday detailed the causes of death for 64 students, with 17 dying from the effect of fire (NZPA, RNZ). The sister of a dead King’s Education tutor said her boss asked her to breach the cordon after the September 2010 quake. A King’s Education director denied that, saying that the building owners gave clearance. The directors were at the hearing and John Ryder said that while they and their staff did all they could to help the families of staff and students, “I think if you asked the question did we do enough, we’d say, `no’. …Every day we said `there are things that we’ve been unable to handle’ and so we were letting people down all over the place because we had 10 people trying to look after all the relatives and friends.” (One News). Personally, I think the directors did well in a horrible situation for an organisation with an enormous death toll, which was 40% of the quake’s total toll. I can’t imagine many organisations would do better.

Loans Public comments on chasing up foreign debtors and NZUSA’s David Do on the same issue (audio) – he said the problem was the debt in the first place.

Teaching & Learning Not many stories make the media about teaching and learning, and this event at Otago Uni looked useful. On that note, here’s a story about top supervisors.

Teen Parenting Auckland’s Joanna Chu is offering free teen parenting programmes as a trial – hopefully you don’t get the programme that makes them go bad J

Rugby Lincoln and Massey are playing their annual grudge match on Saturday – last year’s match is show in the photo. Fiji RWC captain Deacon Manu has just finished his Massey degree.
Good Work AUT! A while back I wrote about an AUT student who completed her degree requirements but was prevented from getting a degree because she hadn’t been her legally. Now AUT has finally given her the degree – better late than never.

Performance Data TEC released data on tertiary education organisations educational performance yesterday, with Steven Joyce kicking it off. Various organisations put out releases to promote their version of the data, including Massey (explaining a low result), Otago Uni (bragging about a top result), WelTec (near-top performance). The ODT profiled the results for Otago Uni and Poly.

CPIT Strike TEU members decided to strike at CPIT for a few hours over lunch yesterday. CPIT put out a much more detailed media release, citing TEU’s membership at CPIT, meetings held and proposed, and more details about the claim. That’s interesting, because TEU can usually count on employers running a mile from any media comment on disputes, and so their media release can be vague. Obviously I prefer a more public struggle. (The Press, NZPA)

CPIT Chefs On a more positive note, a profile of three young chefs by The Press shows how CPIT helped their development.

Firing VCs Yesterday I received an emailed press release calling for Victoria VC Pat Walsh and Auckland VC Stuart McCutcheon to be fired for, respectively, closing down schools/research centres and trying to grab power from academic staff. They want a national day of action on Sep 14. Now there is a Facebook group called Sack Pat Walsh that I assume is related. Anyway, I was meeting Pat on some other business yesterday so I hope he gets a good notice period and can deal with those issues J

Dyson Award Recyclable shoes won the NZ Dyson Award for a Massey grad – nice idea.

Tax Law The latest Supreme Court case over the use of trusts to avoid tax has spurred academic comment. AUT’s Prof Chris Ohms says the decision is clear and Auckland’s Mark Keating said it created confusion. Personally, I think it helps clears up an important area of major tax avoidance.

Crime Doesn’t Pay Not at Victoria, where three crime researchers are being made redundant.

Tropical Trip BOPP students have been in Papua New Guinea while the rest of us have been freezing.

Entrepreneurism a new professor of international entrepreneurship at Victoria thinks NZ is doing well and is giving an inaugural lecture soon.

Insects Lincoln is hosting a big conference on insects.

Uni Games Massey students picked up half the record haul of medals for NZ at the World Uni Games.

Explaining is Losing I love the PR/politics phrase that “explaining is losing” and it applies perfectly to this headline: “Varsities not rolling in cash – Maharey“.

VSM In another great headline, “Key promises to read student letter” about VSM.

New Private Uni? A Hong Kong equity trader wants NZ to build a private university on the Auckland waterfront that can get in the world’s top 10. I’m a bit busy to review it with the depth that it deserves today.

Staff Boycott TEU members at Auckland may boycott a Courses and Career Day, which would be a pretty big deal.

Youth Young mums at a WITT course support proposed new training requirements, although they are older than the target group. Stuart Middleton can sense the debate heating up.

Fishing More coverage of Auckland research on foreign fishing vessels, after an inquiry was announced.

UE Te Mana Akonga leader blasts UE changes for reducing choice for Maori.

Defending Christianity Otago Uni is running a conference that looks like it is defending Christianity, which is almost like the university going back to its roots…

RWC Lincoln VC Roger Feels is proud of the Lincoln students/ex-students in the All Blacks squad. Massey’s Spanish lessons.

Libya Good riddance to Gaddafi and let’s see how long it take to clean up the mess. I’d pick 5-10 years, but if you want to see what a real expert thinks about Libya, Otago Uni’s Robert Patman has been all over the news (TV3, RadioLIVE).

TEI $$ The Minister and TEC released 2010 financial stats for universities, wananga and ITPs yesterday. Media focused on the increased surpluses in each subsector (The Press, Dom Post, ODT) while the TEU said the institutions should have spent the money rather than hoarding it.

Sporting Stars Kayaker Lisa Carrington, from Massey, won the K1 200m event at the world champs. Motorcycle racer Avalon Biddle studies at Massey in her spare time. SIT student Jenna MacKenzie is going great guns as she shoots for a place on the London Olympics NZ shooting team (too many puns?).

Don for TWOA ACT leader Don Brash is holding up a TWOA-overseen school as an example for the country, which is quite a turnaround from when ACT was gunning for TWOA in 2005 or so.

Bad Interweb Victoria’s James Liu has spent more than 1 minute looking at YouTube and has realised the comments are full of racist views when videos raise race themes in some way. It really is a cesspool out there sometimes, but that’s what a lot of society is like outside the elite edited media, which is why politicians are regularly able to gain support by playing to those views.

Chasing Loans IRD is laying court claims against 45 Australian-based student loan borrowers who are greatly in arrears.

Environmental Research Waikato is bringing all of its environmental research into a new Environmental Research Institute, building on its strengths in terrestrial, freshwater, coastal marine and Antarctic ecosystems. It sounds like a good idea.

Benchmarking Victoria is hosting an Assn of Commonwealth Universities conference on benchmarking.

Political Expenses Otago Uni’s Bryce Edwards on a possible Helen Clark expenses scandal or a storm in a teacup, over whether the taxpayer paid for a trip home on which she will speak to a Labour fundraiser. It may backfire on him, although I’m sure he didn’t know that she had returned a few weeks ago to visit her dying mother – the funeral was held on Sunday. Somehow I don’t think anyone is going to care about the airfare.

RWC Auckland’s Peter Watts is helping train choirs to sing national anthems at games.

Top Model A real top NZ model is now studying philosophy at Auckland.

Short Bits Victoria: Prof James Belich picked up a $60K PM’s Award for Literary Achievement yesterday. BOPP: helping out a budding rock band. UCOL: PM is featuring on their open day (sort of); hairdressing competition. Massey: Prof Usha Haley is off to speak at a conference organised by The Economist; Coroner has decided to release info about a suicide on Massey’s Wellington campus in 2009 (NewstalkZB); award for chief flight examiner; Spanish lessons in Palmie.
