Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori – Maori Language Week Lots of students taking Maori courses at WITT. Massey has a new official waiata and is doing other things. NZSkillsConnect is giving away an iPod Touch in a competition this week.

CE’s 5 More Years Mark Flowers has had his contract as Wintec CE renewed for five more years. It’s a good call as I think he’s doing a very good job.

Radio One NZUSA used the closure/sale of Otago Uni’s Radio One as an example of what will be lost under VSM. The broader story was covered by Amplifier, TV3 and the longest one in the NZ Herald.

Happy Feet…is a boy and won’t need stones taken from his stomach, according to Massey academics.

University Blues Massey has celebrated its winners at the New Zealand University Blues but where are the releases from other unis or even from the organising body University Sports New Zealand?

Sir Peter Gluckman…has been reappointed for two years as Chief Science Advisor.

Student Off Bus A veiled Saudi student was kicked off a bus in Auckland.

Politics of Alcohol Otago Uni academics are helping to organise a lobbying conference on alcohol reform.

The Urinator The guy who urinated on people on a Jetstar flight was a Canterbury student. And he was an engineering student too, confirming lots of stereotypes. And he was also netball coach Ruth Aitken’s son, which was why it made the news.

SAS Victoria’s Jim Veitch reckons the government is denying friendly fire in SAS injuries because of politics.

Gangs Canterbury’s Jarrod Gilbert has some strong, but useful, criticism of the police’s response to gangs.

Phonics In stories that are sure to get wider coverage, Victoria and Otago academics have found that phonics is not as good as book learning (media release).

Short Bits Massey: power cut at Palmie yesterday; Manawatu leadership debate; Japanese earthquake expert; Fulbright scholarship winners; food science and innovation award; award for Mike Joy; Otago: Bryce Edwards says people aren’t as interested in politics anymore; bad stop smoking tablets; pharmacy student playing netball for NZ; rural broadband makes life better. Waiariki students preparing for the Toque D’Or competition while Bay of Plenty Poly students did well at Culinary Fare.

Seems that ED Blog is banned in China – I don’t think I’ve been rude about China, but who knows?
New Intl Ed Body Steven Joyce announced yesterday that he would be creating a new Crown entity (NZPA) to take over most of the functions of Education New Zealand, and the offshore representation work of NZTE and the MOE. Education New Zealand gave it support, and it seems the new body will retain the ENZ brand and staff. Anyway, he who has the gold makes the rules and Joyce controls the export education levy and apparently might put some more money into the area too, so he’s made the call. Of course, dedicated readers would remember me covering a leak of this proposal back on 12 Nov 2010.

125 Years – Congrats Massey’s College of Creative Arts is celebrating 125 years this week since the Wellington School of Design was founded in 1886, which grew into Wellington Polytechnic before being swallowed up by Massey. I’ve always loved the photo below of the School’s first director in his office during the 1886-1891 period – note the skull and parrot – and so I scanned it in myself.

School Vocations The ITF put out a media release this week welcoming proposed vocational pathways in NCEA.

Otago Poly Terms The TEU’s Sandra Grey doesn’t like Otago Poly’s proposal for a 3 term year but the students interviewed unanimously liked it. Hmm.

AgExcel The Agriculture ITO has handed out its first four certifications to providers under its AgExcel scheme: Agriculture New Zealand, Dairy Training Ltd, Ruraltec and Aoraki Polytechnic. I wish them well with it.

Christchurch Travel CPIT students want some extra money to get to far-flung temporary campuses.

Science Education Sir Peter Gluckman launched a report on science education on Tuesday, so Massey used the opportunity to launch a new science degree.

Slum Summer A Massey student had a summer internship in Filipino slums via the great organisation AIESEC (yes I belonged to it).

Waikato Uni is… celebrating 20 years of legal education and Kingitanga Day, launching a te reo Maori online journal, and collaborating with Canterbury Uni post-quake.

Short Bits China conference at Victoria today, while Prof Sir Paul Callaghan gets quoted well here for his day job, rather than his student loan moonlighting. Whitireia hosted Tongan luminaries. Canterbury Uni academics are doing a seismic survey in Christchurch, but then who isn’t these days? There’s some research at Victoria into using technology to teach dance and drama. AUT’s Ella Henry commented on the waterfront/plastic waka up in Auckland. Several academics are aiming for a smokefree world. A UCOL lecturer is proposing a cool train sculpture. New plans are to be unveiled on Friday for the AUT Millennium Institute. The ODT has a blast from the past (100 years ago) on Otago Uni’s domestic science programmes. Unitec is running seminars – first up is public spaces for the homeless. AUT: a lecturer argues for lower tax burdens for small businesses; creative writing competition winners announced; and radio astronomy work in finals of world competition. Otago Uni’s Hyde St students helped clean up.

Quake Stories CPIT has programmes up and running. A group of boffins, including some from Otago Uni, have been drilling the Alpine fault – the comments on the story include people worried it will trigger a quake. Meanwhile an Otago Uni boffin is part of a NIWA seismic mapping project. St Patrick’s day drinking tips for Christchurch students. A Massey student is selling t-shorts and will use the money raised to support communities in Christchurch according to his own research. 11 more victims were named yesterday, all from King’s Education. Canterbury Uni will be hosting the Court Theatre’s next run, in a big tent. Victoria and Canterbury Uni boffins contributed to an earthquake prediction paper. A Canterbury Uni earthquake engineer was in both the Christchurch and Japanese earthquakes. The GradConnection firm is running a virtual career fair for Canterbury Uni students.

Quake on Stilts A CPIT student was doing a gig on stilts during the quake – and stayed up, which shows she got some great teaching!

New Companion Prof Jean Fleming of Otago Uni has been made a Companion of the Royal Society of NZ – her focus is science communication.

Farm Day Lincoln’s Telford Farm hosted a farm day for city types. Massey is focusing on water for its local Field Days.

Nice Building NMIT’s new arts and media building has made a top 25 list for education buildings.

Short Bits A Canterbury Uni earthquake strengthening system is being used in Carterton (was also used at NMIT). A Massey fashion lecturer is co-curating an exhibition, while the head of a school support unit at Massey is profiled. The Hocken library has an old Otago map restored and back in the collection.

I’m up at the Higher Education Summit in Auckland today and tomorrow (I’m chairing tomorrow’s sessions), so since I’m on an early flight today, this news update will miss a few stories from the morning papers. I look forward to catching up with some readers in Auckland and later in the week I may jot down a few thoughts on the event – lots of good speakers are scheduled.

Online Music Tai Poutini Polytechnic’s Music and Audio Institute of NZ is running theory classes online until they can check out their Christchurch CBD buildings. Otago Uni has also found some temporary space at a golf club. On a related facilities note, an FAQ from the University of Canterbury’s student accommodation shows how flexible institutions are being with students.

SAR A Waikato Uni student went down to Christchurch as part of a search and rescue team.

Stairs in Quakes Auckland Uni’s Charles Clifton probably knows a lot about stair design, and offers some good reasons for why some failed in Christchurch.

R&D Review Science and Innovation Minister Wayne Mapp announced a review to see how research and development (R&D) can provide better support to New Zealand’s high-value manufacturing and services sector (NZPA).
Short Bits A Bay of Plenty Times editorial cites Otago Uni academics’ anti-smoking views.

“Question: How do you get the country’s eight universities to co-operate? Answer: Turn off the funding tap.

That was the gist of a cheeky crack last week from entrepreneur, scientist and former New Zealander of the Year Sir Ray Avery, at an event showcasing the fruits of university R&D. It got a good laugh, both from the academics in the audience, who included event host Derek McCormack, vice-chancellor of AUT University, and representatives of businesses.” NZ Herald

He’s quite right – turning off the funding tap would get universities scrambling to find new sources of income. But as an interim step, the series of 14 university-business roadshows highlighted in that NZ Herald article are “a good thing”. It’s a great way to lift the profiles of universities’ researchers amongst businesses and build some soft relationships.

I’ve been enormously impressed at the fact that the universities are working together on this project and I hope that they can both keep it up and wrap around it extra initiatives to make the budding relationships bloom.

EIT-Tairawhiti Merger Steven Joyce officially called for comment on the proposed merger of Tairawhiti Polytechnic and EIT - I covered an EIT release about it last week. I think it’s a reasonable proposal, but not necessarily the best use of public money. Putting aside that, I’d like to congratulate Judy Campbell, Tairawhiti CE, for her work to cement in the restructuring and make the Poly as efficient and effective as possible. I think she’s done a good job to take on quite a demoralised organisation and bring it into merger discussions on an even keel.

Honouring A Japanese Graduate A plaque at Lincoln University will be unveiled today to honour the first Japanese student in NZ, who entered Lincoln in 1931 (then Canterbury Agricultural College). He went on to have a distinguished career in Japan and an ongoing interest in, and support of, NZ. It’s a good story – read about it.

Statistical Revelation Auckland Uni academics have apparently discovered a revolutionary way to teach statistics – check it out and make a call on whether they’re right.

Lecturers Sent Home Massey students are grumpy that lecturers are being sent home on Friday to use up some of their own annual leave. But lectures have finished and students are studying for exams, so why do they need to talk to lecturers? If you haven’t listened to them for the previous few months, I don’t imagine they want to give you another tutorial anyway!

Bike Racing Some Hawkes Bay school students are preparing at EIT for the minibike grand prix next week.

Value-Add Products A Victoria Uni professor is giving an inaugural lecturer on the importance of adding value to products – I might pop up to listen.

Real Estate interest.co.nz had a piece on the Real ITO’s proposal to teach real estate in schools.

Fees AUSA is, understandably, complaining about the University of Auckland’s fee rise. It sparked an NZ Herald story with a wider ambit along with a TV3 story.

Soil Studies Here’s a profile of a Massey PhD student looking at ecosystem services and the natural capital of soil.

Broad Beans It’s time to cook with WITT chefs again.

Science Survey A MORST survey shows that people like science, apparently.

Media Mentions Tree climbing competition and World Occupational Therapy Day (Otago Poly),and domestic violence after ChCh quake and geological issues RE the quake (UC).

Given a backlog of stories, this is today’s second news post. There’s a story below on training DHB board members, which reminds me that ED consultant David Choat was elected to the Capital and Coast DHB ten days ago.
TWOA Resurgence TVNZ has done a story on the resurgence of Te Wananga O Aotearoa after a pretty rough time five years ago. The text story is brief but the video has much more detail – it is, however, a once over lightly story and demonstrates the problem of the lack of specialisation in TV reporting.

Silly Research Earlier today I mentioned the silly research (well, really it is just advocacy) by Otago Uni academics saying that alcohol was more expensive than bottled water. Water New Zealand agreed, pointing out that water comes out of the tap at less than a cent for 10 litres.

Uni Entrance University entrance may get harder or easier depending on how you look at it, according to an NZQA announcement.

VSM Vote Tomorrow The VSM Bill goes up for second reading tomorrow and NZUSA has a media release. It won’t pass its third reading until at least the next member’s day, so at least two weeks.

Libyan Deal NZ could get $30m from an education deal with Libya, to take on up to 300 scholarship students.

Auckland Fees University of Auckland fees will go up by the maximum 4% next year – I’ll send a chocolate fish to anyone who can show that Auckland has ever NOT put up fee by the maximum allowed. Craccum did a preview story.

Exhibitions WelTec has a series of events in its School of Creative Technologies exhibition this October and November – first up is an exhibition in Thistle Hall in Wellington (since the ITF is across the road, they have no excuse not to go!). A University of Auckland exhibition on architecture is going to be at Vic’s Adam Art Gallery (I’m only 200m away, but it is up the hill…).

Science Writing The shortlist for The Manhire Prize for Creative Science Writing has been released – it’s a joint VUW-RSNZ award.

Short Bits HSI wants 10,000 workers for the Rugby World Cup. SIT nursing students are holding a health expo. Aoraki Poly had a small shrub fire (I meant shrub, not scrub).

Otago Corner Otago Uni has named a new quality head honcho, is hosting the saboteur priest Fr Peter Murnane, has a physics academic arguing to replace water pipes now before peak oil hits, has secured funding for a zebrafish facility (for more on zebrafish research, read this - it’s really quite interesting),and is tangentially involved in a dental therapist dispute (the DHB is trying to claw back some of the 48 [!] days of leave the staff get). Otago Poly is having a big plant sale this weekend if you’re near Cromwell, where it also just had a cooking competition (here and here).

Shaky Start NZAPEP’s conference has been rescheduled, after being postponed when the Chch earthquake happened a few days before it was scheduled to run.

Loan Rules Jacinda Ardern, Labour MP, had a piece in Craccum yesterday about new student loan access rules based on academic performance.

ITO Measures ATTTO has put out a media release welcoming new ITO performance measures.

All about Palmy There was lots of Palmy news today, including:

a new sculpture in The Square in Palmerston North looks toward Massey;

the Massey University Fire Club won club of the year at the Student City Art Awards;

the employment dispute involving Massey, the cleaners and contractor OCS drags on even longer, which is not good for anyone really;

Massey jointly won the top award at the Maori Language Awards (CPIT won the tertiary section);

a Massey study needs women with endometriosis;

UCOL’s genetics seminars got some press; and

UCOL is sponsoring the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Mini Moto Grand Prix at Manfeild Park later this month

Dodgy Figures at Open Poly? The TEU is arguing that a review of staffing at the Open Polytechnic will result in staff:student ratios of up to 1:55. Now, I know a bit about the Open Poly and I know that they separate teaching from curriculum development and marking (often hiring contractors to do the latter tasks), so I think that if you just count the “lecturers”, then you might end up with quite a misleading figure if you compared it to other institutions that bundle those tasks. Anyway, we’re unlikely to find out more (unless Stephen Day responds to this) as TEU’s media releases are almost always not responded to by institutions. That makes it much harder for bloggers to make wild comments on the “crisis”, but maybe that’s their intention

Faith-Based Science I was reading a piece about the scientific fraud of intelligent design yesterday, which made me think this article about drinking in pregnancy is really all about faith-based science. The commentators on the resreach don’t like the findings, but rather than point to competing science, they say things like: “We’ve always known that the effects of drinking in pregnancy is as much timing as anything. At this stage you wouldn’t find any midwife who would say it was okay to drink.” The fact is that the no-drinking message is based on a public health communication assessment that one consistent message must be given, regardless of the more nuanced science behind it. That’s because public health is as much about psychology, sociology and marketing (and ideology) as it is about science.

Refugee Students Refugees want more governemnt support according to a TV3 story.

Land Sales A University of Canterbury lecturer has written a piece on land sales to foreigners.

Short Bits NorthTec’s wharenui has some new taonga and there is an exhibition at Rawene. AUT Event Production students are helping OxFam run Wave of Change events this week. Otago Uni has installed its new server room (10% of the servers, more power).

Student Help Some Otago Uni students have been doing volunteer work.

Library Wars Canterbury Uni law students have written a strong submission in support of the retention of their law librarian, who is caught up in the major library restructuring down there.

Plane Crash An instructor and a student died in a plane collision near Feilding yesterday, while the student pilot of the other plane managed to land safely. All three seemed to be with Flight Training Manawatu, a provider that is associated with NMIT, which subcontracts a number of flight training companies around NZ. It has not been reported whether the dead student was an NMIT student or not.

Sport and Education SunLive has a story on Bay of Plenty Poly’s High Performance Academy students. Up in Auckland, Unitec has developed a partnership with Auckland Rugby, providing education opportunities to staff and players, while also becoming a sponsor of the Auckland provincial and Super 15 teams (they’ll join SIT as a provincial rugby sponsor).

OUSA Reform Yesterday I mentioned an article on reform at OUSA – here’s the main story from the weekend and here’s a story on complaints about the referendum.

NorthTec Council NorthTec has filled their last (correction, second to last) Council seat with the head of the local economic development agency.

MacDiarmid Institute Last week I did a post on the presentation of Alan MacDiarmid’s Nodel medal to Victoria Uni. Just after that, I saw this great post on SciBlogs about the development of the MacDiarmid Institute – well worth a read for those keen on science.

Farming Science For those keen on farming, here’s a story on Lincoln Uni research about sheep feed productivity.

ITF on Quals The ITF has put out a release about the new quals framework and Jeremy Baker has laid down the challenge: “Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) are the national standard setting bodies for New Zealand industries, and we look forward to that role being given full effect in the new system”. It will be both fascinating and important to see whether the strong words of the latest reform in relation to industry input translate into action.

Talking Fish A University of Auckland researcher is listening to the fish, and they seem to be talking, well, communicating at least.

Science Key The ODT has an editorial today on the importance of science - a constructive contribution.

Top Designer Amber Bridgman, the Otago Poly student who won an award in Italy last week, it now going to be showing at NZ Fashion Week. It’s a good news story.

Conference EIT wasn’t going to run a dry boring conference, not when their topic was wine – they had the NZ Wine Business Symposium last week.

Local Elections Massey Uni students might host some local election debates in the near future.

Racing A Bay of Plenty Poly student is off to the world junior athletics champs in Canada. Meanwhile, a class of cars racing at Manfeild is based on cars produced by the UCOL motorsports course.

Pig Saved A pig wandering in Dunedin’s student area has been saved and is now on a lifestyle property.

Tagging Chef A Weltec grad can’t find a job due to his criminal record, but he’s painted a tribute to Weltec in a photo here.
