PEI Post-Mortem The Taranaki Daily News did an editorial and story on Practical Education Institute yesterday. They have finally found TEC course completion stats on TEC’s website and it’s interesting that it’s only now, exactly a month after they first broke the story, that they found those figures. It reinforces for me how poorly TEC highlights that data – it’s supposed to help students, while professional journalists can’t easily find it. Anyway, the Daily News is finally bringing some more useful context to the closure – PEI’s poor results. NewstalkZB quotes local mayor Harry Duynhoven on the closure and the impact on staff.

4th Generation Melanie Bunce is the fourth generation of females in her family to teach at Otago Uni.

UC Enrolments Canterbury’s Rod Carr is navigating a fine line between saying enrolments are OK, encouraging new enrolments and not suggesting they’re in trouble. I think he’s doing it well. No-one’s picked up the media release, but the messaging could just as easily be aimed at competitors and agents.

Canterbury Loss Up Canterbury’s projected loss for 2012 is up from $10m to $15m, but it drops to $9m once insurance comes in (presumably the earlier $10m figure also dropped after insurance).

Skill Shortages The ITF’s new CE, Mark Oldershaw, has made the news in week 1 – talking about skill shortages.

Extras: prosecution due to a workplace accident at Victoria (by a contractor); big Council investment in carpark to help MIT; a letter to the editor about night classes.

He’s researched furniture flammability, which I would have thought more of an Otago Uni specialisation…

Ant Cycles Victoria’s Meghan Cooling and Phil Lester have found out about the life cycles of Argentine ant colonies.

Policy & Management

Ministers Steven Joyce is picked to get Economic Development (and keep tertiary education?) while Hekia Parata is tipped for education.

Waiariki Settlement Waiariki has been ordered to pay a dismissed head of their nursing school $10,500 compensation and ex-CE Pim Borren has been ordered to pay $6,000 for obstructing the dispute resolution process (I imagine Waiariki will pick upon the bill for that). As I predicted in an earlier post, reinstatement was not ordered. It’s probably a reasonable outcome all around.

Tough 2012 Otago Uni reckons it will have a tough year in 2012 and won’t make a 3% TEC target for its surplus. I will believe it when I see it.

Managers are Good An Otago Uni academic (and former DVC) responds to concerns about an excessive number of managers.

New Gallery A new gallery at NorthTec has been welcomed.

Massey International Massey has launched a new internationalisation strategy.

Extras: Otago Uni Chancellor reappointed; discussion of Massey employment law case; story on WelTec-Whitireia Council merger; Lincoln’s Telford pre-enrolments at a record high; aviation Gateway programme supported by ATTTO.

Bad Review Auckland’s Nick Perry gets a bad review of his latest book – “pretentious prolixity” is one of the reviewer’s comments, but it’s a rather pretentious turn of phrase in itself.

Short Boys Auckland’s John Peek found that some fertility drugs seem to lead to shorter boys (but not girls).
