The government has just released a series of state sector restructuring proposals, including that ERO and NZQA should merge.  I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on it. The merger proposal does explain one odd inclusion in the Education Amendment Bill (no. 4), which required all new regulations by NZQA to be signed off the the Minister (update: well, all but one). A merger with ERO will make the new body a much more operational body (ERO checks schools… Read Full Story.

April Fool’s Day Friday’s April Fool’s Day spoof about Sir Harawira Gardiner being named TEC CE seemed to fool a few people, but I was happy that Wira saw the joke and we exchanged a couple of emails about it. I also joked about a MEKE project where critics of Paul Callaghan would be name and shamed (also… Read Full Story.

Levy Controls Steven Joyce has announced a new Bill to control what institutions charge for student services levies and require student input (NZPA, RNZ). NZUSA welcomed it and only included a very small dig about VSM, which shows how much they do like it. English Language Schools Hit RNZ’s John Gerritsen did a great piece on the impact… Read Full Story.

Today Karen Sewell announced her resignation as CE/Secretary of the Ministry of Education from July this year and the Minister duly thanked her. Karen is retiring after 45 years of being a teacher, a school principal and CE of ERO, NZQA and the MOE. I’ve met Karen quite a few times over the years, in her roles as NZQA CE and then at the MOE,… Read Full Story.

Recovery Steven Joyce put out a release yesterday focusing on Lincoln, Canterbury and CPIT (fleeting mention of PTEs too). CPIT’s Sullivan Ave campus seems OK and usually takes a quarter of EFTS – they are ramping up for more. Joyce also relaxed funding caps for non-Christchurch providers taking on Christchurch students. The following news outlets put out overview… Read Full Story.

Most readers will have seen far too many stories on the Christchurch quake, so I will focus on some key ones that relate to tertiary education. King’s Education The missing students (there are also 9 staff missing) include 26 from Japan, 14 from China, 7 from the Philippines, 3 from Thailand, 1 from Korea and 1 from the Czech… Read Full Story.

I hope your family and friends are safe and well after the Christchurch earthquake yesterday. My closest friends and family are safe but an old colleague from the tertiary sector worked in the first floor of the collapsed CTV building – I hope he is OK. The post today will start with quake news and then cover some… Read Full Story.

There has been an enormous quake in Chch (GeoNet) and those checking websites and TV will have seen some very disturbing images. And the PM just confirmed 65 deaths, with more likely to come. As with the last quake in September, I will be updating tertiary education news as it becomes available. I’ll just use this post today so come back to the site and look again if you’re getting this… Read Full Story.

Export Ed Shake-up Radio NZ reports on the proposed formation of a new export education promotion entity to combine work by the MOE, NZTE and Education NZ. The NZ Herald has a longer piece. Which Books? An Otago Uni emeritus professor has written a book about which great books to read – maybe he should have turned it into a blog??? Exhibition Season Art in the garden up at NorthTec. AUT’s Rookie… Read Full Story.

Thanks to all of the people who replied to my post yesterday questioning a rumoured shake-up of export education marketing. I received all sorts of info from education providers across different sectors, but several have made the following points. Education NZ had a special board meeting this week, attended by Steven Joyce, Minister for Tertiary Education. On the agenda was the likely disestablishment… Read Full Story.
