Policy & Management

Whitireia Buildings Whitireia has pulled out of a $3m contribution to a performing arts development in Porirua, both because they’ve moved their course into Wellington and approved a $20m development at Porirua for classrooms etc to replace prefabs. It’s upset some people in Porirua, but it’s hard to fault the priorities.

Industry Training The MOE will be getting a strong submission from Horticulture NZ on the industry training review.

Congrats Richard Richard Handley, WITT CE, has been congratulated by iwi on meeting Treaty responsibilities.

Titles Race? Ha ha, last week I suggested that Auckland’s appointment of 13 Distinguished Professors might start an arms race around titles and now Lincoln has named one! To be fair, the decision would have been made before Auckland’s release, but it does look like a developing trend anyway.

VSM Hearing Te Mana Akonga has apparently gained a Waitangi Tribunal hearing into its claims about VSM legislation.

Tough Competition The Spirit of Adventure is running a special trip for unemployed 17-20 year olds.

Raukawa App Te Wananga O Raukawa has had some bad news recently but I just came across this cool app they have, eWai, that has waiata tawhito on it. If I have it correctly, they are the traditional chants heard on marae.

Extras: Victoria now has the triple crown of business school accreditation; Methven summer school enrolments; new construction and student facilities at UCOL Wairarapa.

Extras: Auckland cigarette research; three Canterbury researchers to give papers at human-computer interaction conference; new Victoria climate change book.

Public Issues

Aviation Oddity The person who allegedly impersonated Massey’s Frank Sharp, head of the aviation school, in an email that was entered into evidence at a coroner’s inquiry into an aviation accident has been revealed. It turns out that Peter Kirker, a CAA employee (he resigned last week), may have sent the email but the charges will be defended. This is very odd, but has got media coverage from RNZ, NewstalkZB, APNZ, APNZ, One News, NZN, Dom Post, Fairfax and Fairfax.

Summer Reading Massey’s Prof Tom Nicholson has devised a kids summer reading programme, funded by a donation, to stop kids falling back in reading ability during the break.

Charter Schools Auckland’s Peter O’Connor gets a swerve from Karl Du Fresne over charter schools views.

Rowing Lincoln’s Martin Berka is rowing across the Tasman (with a group) but is battling a bad foot infection (release).

Canterbury Woes Canterbury will have an $11.4m budgeted loss next year, based on their media release – different figures were reported in media yesterday (TV3, BusinessDesk, NBR, RNZ, TEU). 24 staff have been given voluntary redundancy at Canterbury (39 applied).

New HSI CE The new HSI CE is Ken Harris – you can find out more about him here. He is appointed on a fixed term, which is sensible given all the merger discussions going on in ITO-land.

Unitec Sold Now before Rick Ede tells me off, I should note that the only thing that has been sold is a building that Unitec leases on the North Shore. I mentioned it a little bit ago and the offer sold in 3 weeks.

Reinstatement? A former Waiariki manager wants reinstatement, rather than just the compensation awarded by the ERA.

Extras: Auckland Council member Jan Dawson is the accountant of the year – TWOA’s Jo Hanita was outstanding new member of the year; update from last week on Auckland-TEU negotiations.

Baby Sex Victoria’s Diane Ormsby has been looking into the effect of heat on the sex of babies (and hasn’t found any).

What’s a palynologist, I hear you ask? Well, it’s someone who studies pollen and other organic microfossils, which are a key part of climate change research.

Extras: Auckland’s Prof Ross Lawrenson on prostate cancer research; Māori research projects; cellphone towers don’t affect house values according to Auckland’s Olga Filippova and Michael Rehm; Waikato environmental law centre.

Rena Victoria’s Prof Neil Curtis says the ship’s cargo, some of which is hazardous, should not be a big problem. Waikato’s Chris Battershill says environmental recovery will take a long time – he worked with Bay Of Plenty Poly tutors (led by Keith Gregor) and senior students to do a baseline survey of marine life in the early days of the grounding Massey’s Malcolm Wright says the grounding hasn’t affected our clean, green marketing image – yet (release). Otago Uni’s Prof Julian Crane has helpfully pointed out that health effects from the oil will be minimal for people unless they eat it or touch it. Massey’s Brett Gartrell expected 500 dead birds to be discovered by the end of yesterday – turned out to be 200, but there’s lot’s going on. AUT’s Barbara Bollard-Breen thinks we need rapid response protocols (as does everyone else). A Massey-trained volunteer talks of the long hours of work for wildlife protection people.

High-Tech Precinct? A new high-tech Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct has been launched in Auckland (3 News, 3 News) but there’s not much to it yet.

Research Ethics Otago Uni’s Emeritus Prof Charlotte Paul is calling for ethical review of health research to be protected in op-eds in the ODT and NZ Herald.

VSM Response In a response to VSM, Massey has boosted its student services fee by the amount of MUSA’s 2011 fees. An agreement has not yet been reached with students’ associations.

Māori Quota Victoria is celebrating 21 years of its entry quota for Maori law students, but its media release doesn’t cite any results from the system, which is a bit sad.

Uni Paternalism Otago Uni is to explain the history and context of its paternalistic code of conduct to students. Good idea to publicise it, since the management want to increase fines.

Fossils If you like fossils, check out this Marsden Fund grant story about Otago Uni’s Prof Daphne Lee.

Awards NMIT’s Arts and Media Building won a couple of awards.

Future Chef This is a lovely story about a student committed to be a chef, who did well in HSI’s school burger competition.

Top Joiner This is another great story on last year’s top Joinery ITO apprentice.

VSM Bill Passes ACT’s Heather Roy celebrated her VSM Bill passing, providing freedom of association for students, as did Act on Campus and the Young Nationals (NewstalkZB, RNZ, NZ Herald, TV3). Speeches by Heather Roy and the Maori Party’s Rahui Katene are online. Keith Ng at Public Address had a great “pox on both of your houses” post about the issue. Labour’s Sue Moroney thinks that students should watch out. NZUSA started a campaign to fix the VSM law immediately after the Bill passed and Labour pledged to reverse it when they get into office.

VSM Bill Lead-up In the lead-up to the Bill passing, there were a few jousts in the media and at Parliament. The Greens’ Gareth Hughes said the Minister should keep his head down (EXMSS VP). NZUSA reckoned that National MP Michael Woodhouse had opposed VSM in a video at Otago Uni and should cross the floor (this may be one of the first times anyone has even written a media release about Michael Woodhouse). Labour’s Grant Robertson supported NZUSA, as did OUSA. The ODT quoted Woodhouse saying the video was edited and he had no intention to cross the floor (the story’s a good one). NZUSA also had a protest at Parliament where about 100 people seemed to attend, going by the photos, and various MPs spoke – Scoop has photos plus releases from NZUSA and the PPTA (Stuff, RNZ, ODT, TV3). NZUSA also listed various amendments voted down during the debate. A protest at Auckland only attracted 20 people and an effigy went unlit. MANA’s John Minto was repulsed by government abuse of students (ie the VSM Bill, not Steven Joyce’s secret dungeons). There’s also a review of Monday’s protests on the Workers Party site. David Farrar gave a detailed review of the VSM debate and previewed the third reading.

Unitec-MIT Collaborate I was sent a media release yesterday with the heading “Unitec and Manukau Institute of Technology strengthen their relationship to benefit Auckland” And the release was about as boring as the heading. They announced a collaboration but gave no details about how it will work and what it will do. Instead, most of the release was about projects done in the past, often with other wider groups. So, that’s probably why no mainstream media covered it.

Mapua Toxicity The report on the clean-up of the toxic site at Mapua has been released – it was done by Otago Uni’s David McBride and others.

Surveillance Bill Otago Uni’s Andrew Geddis on the proposed surveillance bill.

Design Exhibition Massey has their big design exhibition opening tonight (The Wellingtonian) and it looks like a cracker – I think they should invite bloggers J

SAS Death Auckland’s Stephen Hoadley said the SAS seems to be doing more than the government lets on while Otago Uni’s Najibullah Lafraie is concerned about the nature of the raid.

Christchurch TEI $$ Canterbury Uni is calling for more money to support them in 2012, to cover tuition fee losses (they also won a resilience award yesterday). RNZ covered the issues. At least Canterbury has $110K for its gardens.

Aoraki Cuts Aoraki Poly may cut 20 staff as it looks to cut the following courses: L2 computing, L1 life skills, film/TV/radio L3-6, sport and fitness L5, web/advertising/animation design L4-6 and creative writing L5-6. The TEU thinks they should spend their reserves and also bemoans a new requirement to give 48 hours access before coming on campus (that’s an interesting one and must reflect the relationship, where the TEU has pushed hard this year) (Ashburton Guardian, ODT – best link). I’m guessing that Aoraki is looking to exit areas where it has no unique edge, as well as dropping lower level courses to meet TEC targets.

A Place For Talent Prof Sir Paul Callaghan’s latest message – a business plan for NZ.

Tracking Albatross Otago Uni scientists are using GPS to track albatross

VSM The VSM Bill passed its committee stage Earlier in the day students called for a compromise, but they had already lodged a request for an urgent Waitangi Tribunal claim over the Bill (RNZ, NewstalkZB). Later last night the Bill passed its committee stage and is likely to pass its third and final reading on Sep 28 and NZUSA put out a response. I really can’t see how it won’t become law after a third and final reading on Sep 28. That would mean implementation in Jan 2012.

Maori Research Institute The Te Arawa branch of the Federation of Maori Authorities is exploring the development of a Maori Research Institute. Sounds interesting.

Margaret Mutu…apparently said she couldn’t be racist because Maori don’t have power in NZ, but I suspect the Auckland academic was misquoted a little and was not really referring to herself. Anyway, the latest comments outraged lots of people. Don Brash supported Mutu’s freedom of speech. Here’s a long blog post on the issue that may be of interest.

Brain Drain? 560 researchers have claimed there needs to be more support for researchers or they’ll go offshore – a review in the area has just started.

Nanotechnology Idealog has done a good story on nanotechnology regulation and risks, drawing on Victoria and Otago Uni academics’ comments.

Correcting Corrections Yesterday I ran a link to a media release about quals for prisoners, but someone has decided that those figures just pull the wool over your eyes – you decide who’s right (I can’t be bothered).

RWC CPIT students helping out with a rugby museum. Massey economist Sam Richardson on ticket sales and prices (Stuff). Auckland’s Mike Lee and AUT’s Craig Dickson comment on legal restrictions around the RWC.

Celebrating Cauliflower HSI has given budding secondary school chefs an ingredient to make magic with: cauliflower.

Trades Academies Nelson trades academy situation is a bit confused after Nelson College went out on its own while the government wants everyone to share. UCOL’s trades academy responses (and in Wairarapa). Otago Poly trades academy in Cromwell.

Alcohol Canterbury’s Eric Crampton finds that the costs of alcohol use are often inflated (well worth a read). Otago Uni’s Jennie Connor criticises research showing health benefits from alcohol.

Great White Sharks Auckland Uni (with NIWA and Doc) has been tagging great white sharks and showing they come back to NZ (NZ Herald) The coverage was partly due to a marine studies conference down at Stewart Island – covered by The Southland Times, Otago Uni will be building a lab on the island (well, converting a house), while the conference has had a good economic impact.

Otago Students Otago Uni’s student paper, Critic, has a good piece on the media narrative around the Uni’s students (going by this story on burglaries, maybe locking their doors might help).

Unit Standards Degrees…had some brief coverage this week.

Quake Stuff Timaru Girls High School is blocking its girls from coming to Canterbury Uni’s open day today for health and safety reasons – how dopey! The redesign challenge at Lincoln. Canterbury quake lectures. A blind uni student’s post-quake experiences.

Capital Gains Tax Labour’s tax proposals, drip-fed to media, has had some academic feedback. Victoria’s Bob Buckle weighed the pros and cons (and here). Massey’s Bob Hargreaves thinks it won’t raise much money and might raise house prices. Auckland’s Craig Elliffe says it’s a good opportunity for debate. Some AUT academics say the tax is necessary.

Music Education Robin Maconie has a say on NZ music schools.

ITOs As noted in a post yesterday, ITOs that had to hand back money were named.

VSM Andrew Little endorsed voluntary unionism in a final speech as EPMU Secretary. ACT’s Heather Roy took that as an endorsement of the VSM Bill, but Little later said they were different issues (Roy blogged about that). Meanwhile, Labour’s Clare Curran thinks it could all be solved by a compromise (which seems exceedingly unlikely). Also check out EXMSS VP, Big News and Clint Heine.

iPredict…backed down on fee increases (it’s owned by Victoria). Also on Kiwiblog.

Trout The head of Fish and Game NZ defends trout against the charge that they’re worse than dairying for the environment. But he protests a bit too much – trout don’t cause higher nitrogen levels but they have eaten just about everything else in waterways. (A few academics get quoted along the way.)

Plumbing Stoush The Plumbing ITO and industry are going on the attack about training by providers – Unitec responded. It’s the renewal of a very long conflict that had seemed to die down, but maybe ITOs are getting sick of being the victim (BTW, could be more on ITOs being a victim today).

Trout as Stoats In an absurd storey, a Federated Farmers leader blamed water quality on trout rather than dairying. He was roundly criticised, by Otago Uni’s Colin Townsend, Canterbury’s Angus McIntosh and Massey’s Mike Joy (RNZ).

Canterbury Scholarships Canterbury Uni is boosting scholarships and providing preferential entry to first-year students in order to retain as many students as possible in 2012. It was an embargoed release and I haven’t seen it online yet so might write more later.

Uni Rankings The latest QS rankings have been released, on social sciences. Auckland came top on most of them, which I know because they said so – non-one else has commented. Apparently Auckland’s law school is the 18th best on the world, which seems rather unlikely to me.

Burqas and Hijabs A Victoria student is worried about job prospects due to her hijab and more reaction about the person kicked off the bus.

Chaff Change Following on from likely changes at Radio One (ODT, Kiwiblog, NZ Conservative), Massey’s Chaff student paper is likely to cut printing or make other changes to prepare for VSM.

Hospo Quals The hospitality quals review is well underway, says HSI (NB I’m working on it).

School Leavers Auckland Council might take an initiative to support school leavers’ transition into work or training.

Maori Growth in Maori EFTS has apparently led to increased power at WITT. A Vic PhD student on Maori students’ experiences. Auckland Uni Press is launching a new book on waiata collected by Sir Apirana Ngata.

Bike Love? Will Massey evict a bike recycling service or will they find the love?

Careers Hits Career Services had 3m visitors to its website last year.

Paul Henry…spoke to Otago Uni’s Robert Patman about Afghan friendly fire.

Hotere Otago Uni is hosting a big Ralph Hotere exhibition at its Hocken Library.

Pacific Migration AUT’s Richard Bedford on the need for immigration policies to change as Pacific islands lose land to rising water.

Young Farmers A Lincoln grad won Young Farmer of the Year at the weekend. Taratahi helped host a really young farmers’ event. Bill English is unveiling a plaque to commemorate Lincoln’s takeover of Telford.

White Terraces Found I was pretty happy about scientists finding the Pink Terraces in January but it turns out they also found the White Terraces (TVNZ), but only found out after going through all the data (and then waited until the 125th anniversary of their destruction to announce it). Waikato Uni was involved.

Picking Winners KPMG has proposed that agribusiness students should get financial incentives from the government due to a decline in such areas – hmm, how about the industry offering internships, jobs and better pay?

Wintec House Wins Wintec House won Property Council awards for reusing a heritage building and education/arts categories.

King’s Education Inquest An inquest starts today to look at the collapse of the CTV building, which housed King’s Education. Ah, well, that would be the case if you believed a wire story, but The Press has written that “The coroner will not be able to investigate why the building collapsed”. I’ll go with the latter version. Also, the focus will be on CTV and King’s Education staff tomorrow and the students on Wednesday.

ITF Changes Ian Elliott is the new ITF chair, replacing Kevin Bryant (who stepped down). There are also some new board members.

Education and Work Simon Collins has written a good article in the NZ Herald on young people’s experiences trying to get into work and education, with education just being a backstop for some – a good read. Meanwhile Waikato Uni has recognised firms participating in its science and engineering work placement programme.

Te Reo The proposal that school teachers learn about Maori culture and language has spurred quite a few stories (NewstalkZB, RNZ) including some with many comments at TVNZ and RadioLIVE). The NZEI liked the idea (if resources) while the PPTA was a bit antsy about compulsory measures – ACT’s Don Brash didn’t like it at all. However, from what I can see there’s a voluntary programme being rolled out to schools, while Pita Sharples’ media release specifically says that the measures are not compulsory, although pre-service teacher education standards will probably be sought in future. In any case, Sharples wasn’t making a full announcement, but simply responding to the report of an advisory group, the Maori Youth Council.

Beanies for Chch Whakatane locals have knitted and sent down four boxes of beanies to Christchurch students.

Knowledge Links Sir Ray Avery wants to do a Facebook (or LinkedIn) type project to share knowledge about firms’ expertise – the idea was sparked after he found out by chance that Massey was working on the same area as his firm.

Green Stuff Auckland Uni’s Denise Conroy and Rachel Wolfgram are making a specialty out of investigating green weddings. Speaking of green things, here’s a nice review of Vic’s solar bach project.

Marine Biodiversity Waikato’s Prof Chris Battershill links agrichemicals to marine biodiversity.

What Pilot Training Probs? CTC Aviation Group is hiring lots more instructors – they’re obviously not too worried about student loan changes.

Maori King Who knew that Keith Rankin, who complained about the Maori King, was a former Unitec plumbing tutor?

Quake Stuff A CPIT childcare centre seems to be in a difficult financial position (although one would imagine CPIT could spare a few dollars for them). Waikato’s Kevin Furlong visited Tauranga to give a lecture. Canterbury is helping the National Library document the quakes. A story on sea levels and Christchurch rebuilding quotes Canterbury and ex-Otago academics. New Canterbury course to give students credit for volunteer work during the quake is just about to be launched – they will also need to do some writing. NMIT’s latest timber building is of interest to people rebuilding Christchurch.

Arts Waiariki students delivered a performance showcase over the weekend. A Whitecliffe student is exhibiting in Tauranga. An SIT student making his first gig.

Short Bits A WITT grad who started on a young mums’ programme is now working at WITT to help others. Victoria: Liz Jones on punishments for last school kids; Hartmut Hoehle on electronic banking (and David Tripe of Massey on a related matter); a student won an environmental award; a student is on the Wellywood sign panel. An Auckland student is making a few dollars by importing and reselling goods with the high dollar. Waikato: Prof Michael O’Driscoll on a new book about coping with workplace stress (Sunday Star-Times). Auckland: Canterbury: memoir of a mother losing a daughter to cancer. Waiariki’s CE Pim Borren chaired an economic development group for Rotorua (NB the Peter Guerin quoted isn’t a relative). Massey: Imran Muhammad on public transport in Palmie; Clair Robinson on political judgment.
