VSM The VSM Bill passed its committee stage Earlier in the day students called for a compromise, but they had already lodged a request for an urgent Waitangi Tribunal claim over the Bill (RNZ, NewstalkZB). Later last night the Bill passed its committee stage and is likely to pass its third and final reading on Sep 28 and NZUSA put out a response. I really can’t see how it won’t become law after a third and final reading on Sep 28. That would mean implementation in Jan 2012.

Maori Research Institute The Te Arawa branch of the Federation of Maori Authorities is exploring the development of a Maori Research Institute. Sounds interesting.

Margaret Mutu…apparently said she couldn’t be racist because Maori don’t have power in NZ, but I suspect the Auckland academic was misquoted a little and was not really referring to herself. Anyway, the latest comments outraged lots of people. Don Brash supported Mutu’s freedom of speech. Here’s a long blog post on the issue that may be of interest.

Brain Drain? 560 researchers have claimed there needs to be more support for researchers or they’ll go offshore – a review in the area has just started.

Nanotechnology Idealog has done a good story on nanotechnology regulation and risks, drawing on Victoria and Otago Uni academics’ comments.

Correcting Corrections Yesterday I ran a link to a media release about quals for prisoners, but someone has decided that those figures just pull the wool over your eyes – you decide who’s right (I can’t be bothered).

RWC CPIT students helping out with a rugby museum. Vic student is part of RWC choir. Massey’s kicking robot and Auckland’s lectures. Massey economist Sam Richardson on ticket sales and prices (Stuff). Auckland’s Mike Lee and AUT’s Craig Dickson comment on legal restrictions around the RWC.

Literacy Good on ex rugby player Matua Parkinson for talking at WITT about his struggles with literacy.

Kilimanjaro A master’s student climbed Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money for Christchurch.

Celebrating Cauliflower HSI has given budding secondary school chefs an ingredient to make magic with: cauliflower.

Trades Academies Nelson trades academy situation is a bit confused after Nelson College went out on its own while the government wants everyone to share. UCOL’s trades academy responses (and in Wairarapa). Otago Poly trades academy in Cromwell.

Alcohol Canterbury’s Eric Crampton finds that the costs of alcohol use are often inflated (well worth a read). Otago Uni’s Jennie Connor criticises research showing health benefits from alcohol.

$500K Course Grant Victoria has scored a $500K grant from MSI to help develop a new computer graphics option for its masters degree. The aim is to build capability in the long-term to support New Zealand’s digital industries. MSI and Grow Wellington are quoted in the story but no industry representatives. Now I wonder how often MSI actually supports new courses (I would have thought seldom), whether this is the best use of such funds (couldn’t Vic have funded this itself) and whether Vic (or Massey Wellington) should have done something like this a long time ago. I’d welcome comment on this one. Nothing wrong with the idea, just wondering about the approach.

New Legislation Steven Joyce put out a release about the passing of the Education Amendment Bill (No. 4) under urgency (NZPA, RNZ). The Bill covers ENZ, PTE rules, course approval and student services fees.
The Student Loan Scheme Bill also passed under urgency.

Storytelling Otago Uni is running a ScienceTeller Festival that sounds absolutely great. It’s all about storytelling in science.

Arm Wrestling WITT has attracted a top Indian arm wrestler to compete in the lucrative ITP arm wrestling circuit…no, actually he’s here to study engineering.

VSM UCOL students protested VSM on Wednesday as did Wintec students, with 200…queuing for a sausage sizzle.

Ako Aotearoa Award Ako Aotearoa has won an international award.

Sir Paul Reeves AUT VC Derek McCormack on Sir Paul’s contribution.

Working Dogs Here’s an update on Massey’s Centre for Service and Working Dog Health – did you know that it existed?

Happy Feet Massey’s John Cockrem comments on the release plan for the big penguin.

Asperger’s Canterbury’s Jenny Smith has written a piece on Asperger’s Syndrome and education.

MBAs Lots of institutions commented in a Management roundup of business education.

Top Training ATTTO has named a tourism training ambassador.

SJS Goes Online Student Job Search is planning to shut its six face to face offices around the country and shift to fully online services for students. A national call centre will be retained, and salespeople will be based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. It seems eminently sensible and should have been done years ago, as I’m sure my friend Dean Carroll will tell me.

Caged President The OUSA president, Logan Edgar, had made a great stunt out of his self-imposed jail, stirring up some coverage (TV3, Kiwiblog, ACT, NZUSA, OUSA) including of an alleged altercation, but how will it make National MPs change their mind about the VSM Bill? Anyway, if you want to see the president in jail, here’s a livestream – language may offend J.

Top Wine Label A Media Design School graduate’s design was on wine bottles sold as part of GrabOne’s anniversary and funnily enough the same bottles were served at drinks at the ITF last week

Queenstown Campus? Otago is celebrating its co-location with Queenstown Resort College but a campus is not being ruled out (or in) at some stage in the future.

Top Foresters FITEC is getting ready to celebrate its national award winners.

Aoraki Outdoor Ed An internal review of the problems at Aoraki’s outdoor education course early this year has found that restructuring, a new senior manager and a senior tutor leaving were the causes. Sounds a bit like what I found in February, but it seems like they’ve done the hard work to consult everyone and work through things – hopefully it’s more settled now.

Key to Washington Victoria’s Terence O’Brien comments on John Key’s trip to Washington.

Law Grads LawFuel has a rather indulgent story on law graduates, which involves talking to law schools, who don’t know where the grads went…

Chinese PhD Student The remains found near where a Auckland Uni Chinese PhD student went missing will be identified via an autopsy (TVNZ, TV3).

Video Analysis A rugby video analyst is sharpening his skills at EIT after winning a scholarship (media release).

Top(ish) Model Amber has left NZ’s Next Top Model and is back to her Otago Poly fashion design course.

Short Bits Canterbury: flat being given away; more scholarships for Maori and Pasifika (media release); a canny student.

VSM The bill that could create voluntary student membership was reported back from the select committee on Friday afternoon and there was an orgy of media releases, and even a few media stories.

ACT’s Heather Roy (the Bill’s promoter) urged the National party to vote for the Bill.

NZUSA stressed that 98% of submissions opposed the bill so National was failing to listen to the mainstream (some comments on that media release take the opposite view).

VUWSA argues that the government has ignored submissions and put services and a contribution to a $62m project at risk. (NB I am appointed by VUWSA to the VUWSA Trust.)

AUSA has condemned the select committee’s endorsement of the bill.

Labour’s Grant Robertson says that the bill will undermine the educational success and campus experience of many students.

The Greens’ Gareth Hughes said the bill ignores public opinion.

Student Choice said the decision paves the way for genuine student representation in tertiary institutions.

David Farrar at Kiwiblog reckons the bill will pass and that Labour will lose votes by promising to rescind it if they win the next election.

The Homepaddock blog also covers the issue, saying associations should prove their worth.

The NZ Herald reported on the issue, quoting Act’s Heather Roy and Gareth Hughes of the Greens.

The ODT quotes extensively from OPSA and OUSA.

Whistleblowing The NZ Herald picked up on NZQA’s use of the crimestoppers line – I commented on it here.

Save the Turtle! Massey vets are looking after a rare sea turtle and getting some great publicity out of it. You can view a CT scan at Stuff, check out a TV3 story or just read an AAP piece.

Marsden Fund $$ UC got $8m across 13 projects, including one about whether native birds smell yummy to predators. Two Lincoln projects received $1m. Massey got $8m for 11 projects. Otago got $11m for 19 projects, including an investigation into “the bizarre behaviour of ultra-cold atoms” (here’s a cool story on that one).

Fees Up Otago Poly fees may go up 4% with student support charges going up 30%. In other news, the Poly may still move sport programmes to a stadium site if costs come down and a new creative studies building will start construction this week..

Creative MIT It looks like MIT is adding two new schools (creative writing and performance arts) to an existing school of visual arts to create a Department of Creative Arts. The Department is going to be headed by Ken Larsen from the University of Auckland (and long-term MIT Council member) while the performance arts school is a partnership with PTE South Seas Film and Television School. They might establish a film and animation school in the future. All quite interesting really.

Luka Mues won the Shell Student Design Award with her garment Shadowlands which was made out of velveteen and alpaca wool and inspired by the twisted, parasitic forms of fungi growing on a tree. Loren Shields was inspired by her time living in the West Coast when she made her garment Smouldering Energy which was runner up to the Shell Student Design Award. “My aim was to capture the emotional beauty of a burning coal mine when I made the garment which is embellished with real coal.” You can see the images here - top row, the two at far right.

Welcome to all the new readers this week – we’ve had a wee spike in traffic – and let me know if you’d like to see anything new or different. Today’s post is pretty enormous to end the week.

Uni Access There’s a really good NZ Herald story today about university entrance, covering a wide range of issues. It’s probably got the widest coverage of any I’ve seen on the issue, without being a feature story.

New Education Bill Anne Tolley has released a new Education Bill that covers PTE refund criteria, secondary-tertiary programmes and other school matters.

Maharey’s Authority Challenged While Steve Maharey’s in China, the TEU is challenging his authority at Massey. I covered the closure of Massey University’s teacher education programme in Hawke’s Bay yesterday. Now the TEU is saying that closing such a programme should be a Council, not a management, decision. Interesting take. There’s a short Newztalk ZB story here.

Sorting Sheep The impressive looking machine at left is the Gallagher Sheep Auto Drafter, unveiled at Fieldays yesterday, and was designed with the help of Massey Professor Tony Parker. It sorts sheep in new and exciting ways and if you like design, read the story. While I’m on Fieldays, Wintec journalism students are producing a daily paper – here’s yesterday’s edition.

Scarfie Flats Otago flats are due for a cleanup and TV1′s Closeup did a story on them last night (HT DC).

NMIT Strategy There’s a good piece in the Marlborough Express about NMIT’s strategy. (HT TEU)

Whitireia Happy Whitireia Community Poly is very happy about the government’s changes to student permit conditions.

PTE Honour Sandra McKersey, a past NZAPEP President and founder of People Potential, Whangarei, has been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to education and the community. (HT NZAPEP)

Bridge Death Alistair McWhannell was found guilty yesterday of the manslaughter of Catherine Peters, a Massey student who died when a bridge swing went wrong. The story has been covered by Radio NZ, NZPA and the Dominion Post - jail appears unlikely.

Outward Bound OK Outward Bound is celebrating a “highly confident” rating by NZQA in their external review.

Friendly French A University of Auckland architecture student has won the inaugural excellence scholarship by the France-New Zealand Friendship Fund.

Stab in the Dark A University of Otago masters student has done some impressive research on the effect of stabbing on different fabrics, including taking account of the age of the fabric – apparently it’s a cap in crime-related research.

Boatbuilding Bay of Plenty Poly’s dropping of boatbuilding is inspiring some people to find alternative ways to interest people in the industry. It’s all a bit informal, but that’s where a lot of things start, and informal education can be a great launching pad.

Waikato Honey This seems to be a new story on the Comvita-University of Waikato stoush, but most fo the details are the same as last week’s story.

New CPIT CEO There’s a Christchurch radio interview with CPIT’s new Aussie CE here. She sounds like she’s good value.

UCOL Corner UCOL has put out some releases about successful ECE stduents and a mentor for fine arts stduents.

It’s not just Michael Laws Wanganui’s deputy mayor Dot McKinnon has some strong educational ideas to rival Michael Laws’ outspokenness : “If we can encourage school leavers to take on skilled trade training, instead of the university track, we are doing them and our communities a favour. Let’s face it, you can make a lot more money in trades than you can in academia.” Read more here.

Geography Book The University of Canterbury is publishing a book of papers by George Jobberns, NZ’s first Professor of Geography (1942-60).

Top Glass Ross Holmes is this year’s most promising glass apprentice, announced by the Joinery ITO.

SIT Student Gets Chance An SIT student has had multiple convictions discharged after being given time to turn his life around - it’s a nice story.

Tairawhiti Wine A Tairawhiti Polytechnic chardonnay has again won a wine prize.

Immersive Art An AUT PhD student is using Macs for her immersive reality art.

Spitting on Babies… can have health benefits in passing on healthy bacteria, but only if you’re the mother and part of this University of Otago study.

It’s musical chairs time in ITPs as an average of 14 Council members at each ITP need to fit into the new 8-person Councils from May 1. This is the first post in a series on the new arrangements – in the next post, I’ll do a deeper analysis of the issues, but today I’ll focus on UCOL.

Just before Xmas, the Government passed the Education (Polytechnic ) Amendment Act 2009, which will result in smaller Councils. Compulsory appointment types have also been removed, such as the CEO and student, staff, employer and union representatives. In short, there will now be eight Council members, four appointed by the Minister and four appointed by the Council. The current Councils are deciding appointment methods now.

UCOL decided last week that they would only specify roles for the CEO and an iwi representative, while the other two roles will apparently be chosen by the Council, on skills and background.

The council also agreed on a new statute which outlined the skills nominees required. UCOL chief executive Paul McElroy said the statute aimed to create a balance of representatives. Applicants’ gender, ethnicity, and location will be considered, as well as skills such as tertiary knowledge, governance experience, business background and leadership qualities.

Students and staff (other than the CEO) will probably miss out under this approach, although UCOL might set up a committee to get student input.
