Libya Good riddance to Gaddafi and let’s see how long it take to clean up the mess. I’d pick 5-10 years, but if you want to see what a real expert thinks about Libya, Otago Uni’s Robert Patman has been all over the news (TV3, RadioLIVE). TEI $$ The Minister and TEC released 2010 financial stats for universities,… Read Full Story.

Psychopaths? In a study just crying out for journalistic, if not academic, review, Victoria’s psychologists release a survey showing commerce students are more likely to display psychopathic tendencies. It’s the sort of story that will probably make the Science Media Centre sad. My key concerns are that the definition of psychopath isn’t made clear enough, and the distinction… Read Full Story.

UE The NZ Herald has written an editorial supporting the University Entrance changes. Youth Policy TV3′s Duncan Garner took an axe to the government about whether it was doing enough about youth unemployment. Otago Poly CE Phil Ker is waiting for the details before he passes judgment on National’s policy. Kiwiblog on youth benefits. Debate about unemployment stats…. Read Full Story.

VSM Protest John Key opened the refurbished Bill Robertson Library at Otago Uni on Friday (which sounds like a great development). He was met by a protest against VSM, totalling either 150 according to RNZ (I counted that many in the video here at Red Alert), 300 according to the ODT or 600 according to The Standard (apparently… Read Full Story.

AUT Arrest The Police arrested AUT’s former employee Jonathan Kilpatrick and he appeared in the District Court on false accounting and related charges. It seems that he had been putting false invoices in the system since 2002 and paying the proceeds to himself. The 82 invoices totalled $665, 985.25. Stories were up on TVNZ, TVNZ, TV3, RNZ, NZ… Read Full Story.

VSM in 2012 Yesterday I wrote to ED Insider clients that it was exceedingly unlikely that the VSM Bill would be debated that day. I’m happy to admit to that, because no-one else knew that Labour’s filibustering would end other than Act and (presumably) National. The story is below. Early in the day, Phil Goff was defending Labour’s… Read Full Story.

New Secretary of Education Lesley Longstone is the new Secretary of Education and will replace Karen Sewell in November (Dom Post, RNZ, NZEI, PSA). Longstone is currently the Director General for Infrastructure and Funding at the English Department for Education (she’s been at the Dept and its predecessors for 10 years). The SSC media release says she “has… Read Full Story.

Yesterday was the first weekday news post missed since ED Blog started, other than the Xmas break and public holidays. Sorry for that, but my media monitoring site was so slow that connections were being lost and I couldn’t access the stories. I’ll have a back-up system running on Monday. Great White Sharks Auckland Uni (with NIWA and… Read Full Story.

Lots of interesting stories today and very few tedious media releases! Bye Jonathan! Jonathan Walmisley is moving on from Telford, having served as CE and then as head of the Telford division of Lincoln since January. The ODT has a long profile of him. I’ve enjoyed working with Jonathan immensely and wish him all the best. Home Auctions… Read Full Story.

Drug Bust An Otago Poly student was found with $15-20,000 of cannabis (NB Police estimate, probably inflated and based on street value) in Cromwell last October. He got off with six months community detention. Most Trusted? It may seem nice that 3 scientists, two affiliated with unis, topped the Readers’ Digest most trusted list, but one would hope… Read Full Story.
