Canterbury Loss Up Canterbury’s projected loss for 2012 is up from $10m to $15m, but it drops to $9m once insurance comes in (presumably the earlier $10m figure also dropped after insurance).

Skill Shortages The ITF’s new CE, Mark Oldershaw, has made the news in week 1 – talking about skill shortages.

Ant Cycles Victoria’s Meghan Cooling and Phil Lester have found out about the life cycles of Argentine ant colonies.

Policy & Management

Loan Scheme Loses Money TV3 did a story at the weekend disclosing how the interest-free student loan scheme would fail if it was a business, although it must be said that giving away money at no cost has never been seen as a winning business strategy. I’m happy it’s being highlighted but the treatment is a bit odd. Keith Ng at Public Address got grumpy about the story.

ACE Numbers The Press ran a story on the decline in ACE student numbers, seemingly just citing numbers from a representative of ACE-providing schools. The numbers are probably about right but I’d love to see what has really happened in that market and what people have done instead.

Otago Poly to Akld Otago Poly is setting up an Auckland campus to serve international students. They’re working with PTE Future Skills and plan to offer the first year of their business degree there.

TEC to Go? The TEC would be abolished if Tamaki independent candidate Stephen Berry has his way – he won’t, of course.

Transport Training Bay of Plenty Poly has a new transport training centre.

NZ Studies The 2009 closure of the UK-based Centre for NZ Studies made the news at the weekend as there was some controversy in the air. I’m not sure I care either way but it seems the accusations could either spell out corruption or a negotiated settlement, depending on how you look at it.

People Should Google AUT’s Alan Robie has been promoted to professor and the media release claimed that he might be the first journalism professor in NZ or the Pacific (there are heaps in Australia though).

King’s Education Push for an inquiry into the death of a King’s Education student in the Feb quake.

Extras: Otago Uni disability conference could lead to centre at Uni; WITT’s Richard Handley on youth unemployment (he’s misnamed in the report); decisions on Massey’s teacher education courses in new year; NZUSA likes the Maori Party tertiary education policy; discussion on IRL reforms (and again); Otago Uni’s advanced school science programme; Shane Telfer’s Fulbright; new Otago Uni neurosurgery lecturer.

Vanuatu Waikato’s Julie Barbour has a Marsden Grant to “complete the world’s first large-scale comparative study of “mood systems” in the Vanuatu languages” …

Climate Change Otago Uni and Victoria academics have reviewed the government’s work on climate change and found it came up short – blogger No Right Turn complains that the report is not available online.

He has about 10 times my readership and is generally funnier. LawFuel also mentioned Victoria’s Dean Knight and Otago Uni’s Andrew Geddis as top law bloggers.

My media monitoring supplier celebrated the first day of our new contract by cutting off my access, so today’s post may miss a few things as some new Google Alerts I set up last night start operating – should all be fine by tomorrow.

Aoraki Changes The ODT has a story about how Aoraki should develop a replacement media course with a bit of everything to replace its specialist media courses in Dunedin – it’s a TEU suggestion. Dunno about you, but keeping one wide-ranging course when the individual specialist courses don’t make money doesn’t seem to make sense to me. The Timaru Herald has more detail on the TEU submission.

Massey Promotions/Changes Massey has promoted lots of people and highlighted a dairy chair for Danny Donaghy. They have also reported back on feedback on teaching qualification changes.

Labour Policy Labour released their tertiary education policy on Friday (media release). The ACE sector liked it.

Ship Cleanup Massey’s Brett Gartrell and his team is looking to scare birds away from the oil slick (media conference video). SIT’s Teri McClelland is also on the wildlife team. About six penguins were washed down, or five penguins and 2 shags, but they have room for 200 (here are some photos).

Waiariki Decision Two Waiariki managers had dismissals ruled as unjustified by the Employment Relations Authority. The dismissals were over expense claims. CE Pim Borren was criticised over his actions and in a somewhat odd follow-up, one of his staff (the HR manager) said Borren wouldn’t be reprimanded (surely the Council Chair should have said that?).

Kiwi Thinking Victoria’s Marc Wilson has done an interesting survey of NZer’s attitudes (detail).

Loans Bill & Payments The Student Loans Scheme Bill was passed under urgency yesterday after a lengthy period in select committee (Dom Post, NZPA). NZUSA thinks it is a mixed bag. Meanwhile, expat loan repayments are up and the HEKE project is claiming partial credit, although I’m more inclined to attribute it to the IRD staff doing phone follow-ups (media release).

Quicker Visas Jo McKenzie-Mclean has a great story in The Press about Immigration NZ looking to pass visa decisions across to some trusted education providers (read universities at first). They’re also focused on getting shorter approval times. Good on INZ!

VSM Protests NZUSA ran a day of VSM action yesterday, urging “National to be Rational” (gaynz.com). EXMSS VP Dave Crampton had an op-ed in the NZ Herald arguing that students are losing control over their services – it’s a good article if you’re looking an overview of the student case. Auckland students rallied against the ban, as did Otago Uni students, NZUSA also stirred up a supportive media release from the PSA.

RWC Sex Etc An Auckland lecturer on the abstention campaign – might have been Tom Agee. Massey is offering Spanish lessons for Palmerston North retailers (the area is hosting Argentina).

Sustainable Students Lincoln has attracted 12 students from Vienna for a masters degree in sustainability and 20 more are on the way. It’s a partnership with a university over there.

Pharmacy Scripts Pharmacists will be able to prescribe medicines after they pass a new course developed by Auckland and Otago Unis (amazingly, it’s the first such jointly developed course).

Massey Sleuths Massey vet sleuths have found foul play in the death of a swan and that five kea were killed in Arthur’s Pass with a shotgun and airgun.

Youth MPs Jacinda Ardern and Nikki Kaye on engaging youth. The ODT on National’s latest policy.

Top Butchers For the first time the Retail Meat ITO’s top NZ young butchers are women.

Trades Centre Nelson College is building its own trades centre – they didn’t get trades academy funding (as a group of schools and NMIT did) but decided to go their own way – good on them for making the investment and I hope it works out. It’s good to see the government investment in trades academies has stimulated some other action.

Vic Jobs Two international relations jobs have gone at Victoria. The TEU says it is a watershed issue, as there was no financial crisis, but I just see it as using existing resources to provide a different service.

ACE Labour’s David Shearer says ACE is withering away due to school providers dropping from 123 to 25 and numbers dropping by 165,000 (TVNZ). Dunno what the source is but it’d be interesting to see what non-school providers have done, as Steven Joyce suggested.

Short Bits Auckland: fishing report has prompted protests in support of workers; photography exhibition; is a drawcard for the city.
Welfare Reform Welfare changes announced by John Key yesterday will impact on the secondary-tertiary interface (speech, NZH, NZH, Greens, Labour)

Short Masters An unlikely story made TV news on Friday: that a one year Masters degree should be explored to compete with Australia in the international market.

Ivy College…has shut down, after bad publicity a month back. I wrote about them in July and suggested that NZQA’s restriction on new enrolments might hasten their demise.

Fishing Problems Media release on Auckland academics’ research on fishing boat working conditions.

Glad to Pay Taxes Massey’s Deborah Russell is glad to pay taxes and has written an op-ed on the welfare system.

ENZ Awards One of Education NZ’s awards went to Victoria Uni for its Student Support Life Cycle.

International Numbers Consultant Tim Rogers thinks that much more co-operation between sectors (especially universities and PTEs) is needed to double earnings from international education.

Sea Lions Sea lions are apparently being badly affected by squid fishing down in the Auckland Islands, according to Otago’s Bruce Robertson (and the evidence looks strong).

UE Changes Labour’s Kelvin Davis also doesn’t like the new UE requirements and their likely impact on Maori. Manawatu principals think UE will now be tougher but aren’t too worried – it was the same with BOP principals.

Book Awards Victoria student Gemma Bowker-Wright has won the BNZ Katherine Mansfield Award. NorthTec tutor Diana Menefy won the LIANZA Children’s Book Award.

Youth Training Labour is chasing National over the relatively small size of Youth Guarantee compared to the large size of youth unemployment.

VSM NZUSA organised a protest outside the National Party’s conference – looked like 20-30 people (TV3, NewstalkZB).

Ghosts? Massey Wellington’s old Museum site and Victoria’s Weir House hostel have made Wellington’s top 10 ghostly sites.

Adidas Auckland’s Denise Conroy and Mike Lee, and Otago Uni’s Phil Osborne all weigh in on adidas’ jersey cock-up.

Getting Fat Otago, Massey, Auckland and AUT academics have signed on to an open letter warning about our high diabetes rates and listing nine interventions that should be taken (NZ Herald, Dom Post, NewstalkZB, RNZ).

Community Ed The NZ Herald had a good story on community cooking classes around Auckland (no, they haven’t all closed…).

Rugby A Massey grad is heading up the IRB’s Rugby World Cup effort, so Massey has done an interview with him. Massey’s Malcolm Mulholland is also in the thick of it from the rugby history angle. Meanwhile, Waiariki was celebrating its sponsorship of the BOP team, which has just marked its centenary.

Nice Recovery An Otago Uni student has recovered well from a spinal injury.

Orgasms Qantas has run a doco on female orgasms in its in-flight entertainment and the NZ Herald got a comment on it from Victoria’s Kevin Dew. But his specialism seems to be “Sociology of health and illness; health-care interactions, public health.” Another odd media choice of commentator.

PTE Profile Nelson site Wild Tomato has done a nice profile of the PTE Whenua Iti Outdoors (and also an award for an NMIT building).

Jury Trials Canterbury’s Chris Gallavin and Otago Uni’s Pro Mark Henaghen on changes to jury trials.

Quake Stuff Christchurch students are worried about their marks and whether they’ll be seen as valid, give the use of aegrotat marking etc. Preferential entry at Canterbury is going well – I wish them luck with their recruiting but some big redundancies look like they’re looming down that way (RNZ).

Congrats to former NZUSA and VUWSA president Andrew Little for his place on the Labour list. Another person on the list, Kate Sutton, also knows a bit about tertiary education from her time working for Manukau’s COMET (Update: and of course she was AUSA president and has spent six years on Auckland Uni’s Council). They’re both good people and would make a difference to Parliament.

Dodgy English Entry Scores The NZ Herald ran claims of students being accepted to a PTE cookery course with far too low English scores. The Herald is running a good series on these matters, especially since they’ve taken the time to meet legal requirements and publish strong allegations.

ACE as Election Issue? ACE educators want to make restoration of their funding an election issue, but I think they are doomed to fail – in the heat of the moment they failed to get any traction and with the sky not falling in the interim, they’re pushing it uphill.

Carved Trees Otago Uni’s Ian Barber and Justin Maxwell are arguing for more protection for Moriori carved trees on the Chatham Islands (RNZ, NewstalkZB, ODT). You should read about it, as it’s quite interesting.

CTV Building The Press has a long story about the CTV building, weaving in people’s stories with the engineering issues.

Hi-Vis Fashion A fashion show by first year CPIT students on high-visibility fashion attracted John Key as a guest (and he got a tie)

Oxford Trip Canterbury Uni students are off soon to Oxford University.

Small Courses Aoraki Poly’s local paper has made a big deal of the number of the Poly’s low enrolment courses, but the numbers don’t mean much without peer comparison, financial analysis, etc.

Postcolonial Quake Canterbury Uni’s Dr Katie Pickles offered a postcolonial analysis of the impact of the Christchurch quake (yes, really). This stirred a lot of comments on the Stuff site and by blog New Zealand Conservative.

SIT Art…is up, with high enrolment growth.

The PSA has started a poster campaign in the style of National’s 2005 campaign posters to make fun of the “nice to haves” that Bill English said are to be cut from government budgets. Anyway, I just went there and the profiled poster was this one, which isn’t quite what they wanted to make fun of…obviously Blue is National and gold is the PSA.

ITP Cuts Bay of Plenty Poly is responding to $2.2m lower funding next yearby cutting 120 EFTS and possibly 4 staff. Maybe it’s just me, but for that much of a cut in $$, the EFTS/staff cuts don’t seem so bad. The EFTS cuts are due to ACE cuts and will affect free computing courses, while the rest fo the money will be largely due to one-off funds ending.

Huata Problems A PTE called Jireh International Academy has gone into liquidation in Auckland. It is owned by Wi Huata, husband of Donna Awatere Huata, and offered a mix of English, carpentry and boatbuilding (hmm, wonder why no-one filled that niche before!). The Boating ITO also put $10K into the operation to support it. An NZQA audit in February showed 9 policies were not met, compared to 8 at the previous audit, which is always a bad sign. That report also showed that two wananga (Aotearoa and Awanuiarangi) also had partnerships with the PTE.

Paul Henry Academics from CPIT and Massey have been commenting on the Paul Henry broadcasting and employment issues respectively, while the blog No Minister comments that a reduction in Indian students is unlikely (I agree, and his analysis of the Indian government’s domestic motivations for their strong response is convincing).

VSM Radio NZ had a Focus on Politics feature yesterday on students’ association compulsory student membership - it is 53 minutes long!.

Drinking Research People who drink at school will also drink at university, and will probably feel unhappy about sexual experiences according to Otago Uni research that will not surprise anyone in the whole wide world.
