Policy, Management & People

Wings Clipped The flight training school that was the focus of a bad IEAA report has closed down. The Wings Flight Training Academy owner said the students were out to get him: “RP Singh is like an innocent-looking rabbit in the forest when you’ve got 10 greyhounds trying to kill him”. I challenge people in trouble to come up with a better quote this year J

Glass The Wanganui Glass School’s low enrolments are stirring discussion in the town.

New Media Centre Whitireia has moved into a new, much more modern, space after exiting its earthquake prone Wellington Media Centre premises.

Treasury BIM The TEU’s Sandra Grey had a post on The Standard last week about Treasury’s BIM – it’s a good opinion piece (here’s a relevant story about mature career changers). Kerre Woodham writes a piece on the same issue claiming that elitism is good – one of her commenters says “university study is a drain on society and serves only to allow communism to find sympathisers”. Hmm.

Fake Quals The Commerce Commission is investigating Genesis Eight International College of Security, a security training operator that wasn’t NZQA registered (RNZ). Apparently the operator plagiarised material from Wintec and TSSL (a PTE)

Extras: Labour’s David Shearer visited Massey; progress on Otago Uni neurological chair fundraising (plus another story); The Press covers Rod Carr’s salary issues; proposed Christchurch heating system might involve CPIT; visit to Waikato by Chinese university partner; export education links with China; new Pasifika centre at Canterbury; an interesting piece on Asian student experiences in NZ (and a more formal article quoting Auckland’s Manying Ip).

Research & Innovation

Kauri Rings Auckland’s Anthony Fowler and colleagues have used kauri rings to deduce how affected we will be by El Nino/ La Nina (SMC, Stuff, NZ Herald, RNZ, AAP, TV3).

Storm Petrels Auckland’s Matt Rayner and others have found good evidence of NZ storm petrels breeding in the Hauraki Gulf – they’re only 35g and it’s hard to find them on land (Fairfax, RNZ).

Population The population research by Natalie Jackson and a student has generated stories on Waitaki population and Tararua/Waitaki along with earlier stories. It’s a good example of how to generate many stories by providing local angles.

Ethics Changes Various Otago and Auckland academics are concerned about changes to government ethics committees.

Extras: Otago Uni’s PhD student looking at time banking, Ken Hodge on master’s competitors and Jill Paris on literacy research in Southland; more on Otago Uni’s HIV research (and again and again); Canterbury links with venture capital; Massey hosting finance research conference; Victoria’s Prof Sir Paul Callaghan on clean-tech; Massey’s Steve Corbett on a story about invention; sticK on KiwiNet’s new portal.

Public Issues

Public Academics The NZ Herald had a piece traversing the issue of whether there are enough public academics in New Zealand. Personally, having trawled through academics’ public comments for the last two years, I can’t see any great problem at all. Many, many academics are engaged in public debate in New Zealand. In fact, I decided last month to do a monthly recognition of a public academic – first one will be in February.

Academic-Bashing? Auckland’s Margaret Mutu has written in Australian academic discussion blog The Conversation about her experiences of “academic-bashing”. Now she overstates it when she says she was nearly “sacked” (Auckland was appropriately supportive of her throughout) but she makes some good points about the public response to her comments about immigration. On the other hand, she did engage in an emotive issue and did not present any particular evidence to support her views (either then or in this latest post), although I imagine the people who emailed her did not present their arguments in as civil a manner as she did.

Brothels Otago Uni’s Gillian Abel and Victoria’s Dena Knight comment on brothel regulation.

Class Size Massey’s Prof John O’Neill criticises proposals to increase class sizes (Manawatu Standard).

Farm Sales AUT’s Rawiri Taonui on farm sales.

Extras: Auckland’s Rhema Vaithianathan on NZ businesses; Massey’s Ted Zorn on the Air NZ CEO; WITT’s Margaret Smith on a Waitangi Day panel; Waikato’s Jagdeep Singh-Ladhar on water allocation (Waikato Times); Massey caring for 22 Rena birds; Victoria’s Peter Thompson on public broadcasting; AUT’s Brian Broom diagnoses a columnist; Massey’s Mike Joy on fish quotas.

Students

Liquor Ban Dunedin City Council is considering a liquor ban in the main student area of North Dunedin.

Olympics Profile of Waiariki Olympic kayakers.

Bullet Problem An Otago Uni student was being held in India after 3 .22 bullets were found in his luggage (Hawke’s Bay Today).

High Rents Auckland students are complaining of high rents – the school leaver that is the focus has to weigh up flatting or living with his parents on the North Shore and commuting. And this is a problem how?

Extras: Cook Islands student off to AUT, with a recent Otago Uni grad returning; Careers NZ advice to students; Auckland student trialling macular degeneration treatment; Victoria student promoting a jet board while dressed up as a penguin.

Youth Unemployment The Reject Youth Unemployment coalition wants to meet Paula Bennett to discuss youth unemployment issues – given it is a leftwing coalition that launched a few weeks out from the election, complained about “the last three years” and is now inviting Bennett to meet via media release, I suspect they may not be that successful in their meeting goal.

Ag ITO Excels The Agriculture ITO has had a good EER report with highly confident and excellent findings galore.

Taupo Language Here’s a nice profile of Taupo Language, and especially founder Rose Blackley, who I always enjoyed working with when I represented English language schools. Note the dig at compliance costs towards the end – might be worth following up.

Student Pub…consent may be appealed by neighbours of Canterbury, with parents upset by a school board of trustees agreeing to the building.

Cancer Research The HRC and MOH have put in $2.7m for 3 cancer projects at Auckland (2) and Massey (APNZ, HRC).

Enzymes & Microbes Waikato’s Vic Arcus and Jo Hobbs have been creating billion year old enzymes. Other Waikato educators are checking out archaic microbes in Antarctica, with a National Geographic team in tow (Dom Post). Back to the present, Victoria’s David Ackerly is reengineering microbes like botulism or gangrene to create enzymes that activate cancer prodrugs – it’s an interesting media release.

Maori Issues A Massey study apparently showed a low number of stories on Maori issues and the Treaty of Waitangi. I understand the first issue being a concern, but the second hardly seems to be a community news staple.

Whitireia’s 25th Nice story on upcoming celebrations at Whitireia and its development since 1986.

Aoraki Changes Consultation has been extended on changes to Aoraki courses by two weeks – not really a story.

Architecture + Women Auckland Uni and industry are supporting a website, graduate tracking and broader initiatives to celebrate 80 years of female architecture grads (in 2013).

Election Canterbury’s Eric Crampton argues that the RWC win will have no effect on the election and actually cites data! It’s not killer data but he makes good points. Massey’s Claire Matthews urges major parties not to make KiwiSaver a political football (yeah right).

Rena The Bay of Plenty Times has a great long interview with Massey’s Brett Gartrell, who seems to be doing a great job with his team to save birds affected by the oil spills. Penguins have a new home after 314 have been rescued from the Tauranga area – check out the photo and read about Massey’s care schedule. US specialists have joined the Massey team.

Cramming Students This one’s not about students, but students in Rotorua cramming into houses to keep rent low.

Measuring Value Waikato’s Ricardo Scarpa has an interesting role on an EU panel in measuring non-monetary things like social values, time and happiness.

Low Student Votes Incoming Massey student president (for Palmie campus) on the challenges ahead and his views on bears. What amazed me was that only 153 students voted in the elections for 2012, when Massey reports a campus population of about 8,500! That’s really quite embarrassing – more students turn up to burn a couch in Palmie.

Entrepreneurs Win Four firms have each won a share in $1m of low interest loans in an Auckland Uni Business School Entrepreneurs’ Challenge.

Career Advice Careers New Zealand has a far too long media release about new career benchmarks in secondary schools. Paras 3-5 are quite informative.

Teaching Ideas Good event for tutors was held up in the Bay of Plenty.

Carpooling Massey has a new carpooling system but hasn’t said if anyone is using it.

Food Innovation Network The Auckland Centre has been opened – congrats to Massey and partners.

Fulbright/Rhodes Waikato’s Holly Thorpe and Canterbury’s John Hopkins are Fulbright Scholars, and an Ashburton local won a Rhodes Scholarship.

Top Farmer Lincoln’s South Island Farmer of the Year competition is at the finals stage (The Timaru Herald).

Free Trade The Wellington Employers Chamber of Commerce hopes a proposed free trade deal with Taiwan will help export education but it probably won’t help too much, as our standard mode of export ed isn’t really restricted by trade rules now.

RWC Victoria students at the RWC parade. Massey’s Sam Richardson is doing some economic analysis of the RWC, Victoria’s Trisha Dunleavy on viewing records.

Student Radio…apparently needs a better frequency in Hamilton.

Short Bits Massey: symposium on art exhibitions; David Tripe on PSIS’ name change; farm business management scholarships (with Lincoln); Prof Kerry Chamberlain gets European recognition; motorcycling and boxing students. AUT: shut off most of their gas (Stuff); Emma Beatson analysing some beached whales. Otago Poly: Char siu bao recipe (roast pork buns). Aoraki: student exhibition. Waiariki: cool op shop competition. Canterbury: Prof Angus Hikairo Macfarlane has published a book with Massey’s Valeria Margrain on student behaviour; music students’ success. Lincoln: launch of new centre. Otago Uni: Prof John Dawson on suicide pact charges.

RIP Frank Holmes Emeritus Prof Sir Frank Holmes, a giant in NZ public policy and economics circles, died yesterday morning at the age of 87 (NewstalkZB, Business Day, One News). He was a long-time professor at Victoria (22+ years) and founded the Institute of Policy Studies, which I’d nominate as one of the most successful institutes amongst NZ universities. Comments have been made by Victoria and Colin James (on behalf of Ross Holmes).

Aoraki No Confidence Aoraki staff are upset at the Council’s slow response to the vote in no confidence in their CE, according to the TEU’s local organiser. Generally, I’d just see this sort of thing as a negotiating tactic, given it happened at a TEU meeting, but the TEU says it isn’t. Hard to tell without being down there really, but relations certainly seem frayed.

Waiariki Win Waiariki CE Pim Borren accepted a social responsibility award for the institute and gave a good speech.

It Was a Pub! Last week I wrote that a new Canterbury events centre sounded like a pub and that’s how The Press sees it.

Kiko Li…is the name of the Chinese student killed by fellow Chinese students. One of her killers pleaded guilty, while the second was found guilty by a jury last week.

Unitec for Sale? Well, you can buy a piece of the property they lease on the North Shore – looks like an interesting investment option (NB don’t take my word for it – seek professional advice…).

Job Market The job market may be tough but a Waikato Times story cites some rather poor study choices.

Gender and Education The Dom Post had a long piece on the impact of a man drought and a highly qualified man drought, which leads to lots of fairly predictable angles.

Quake Stuff Canterbury phone app to show what buildings used to exist in Christchurch (uses augmented reality). Paul Millar’s Canterbury quakes digital archive ideas has got off the ground and will launch this week (Sunday News). Canterbury’s Jon Harding has found that silt has caused enormous loss of fish and insect life in Christchurch rivers, possibly requiring human silt removal to get things going again. Demolition of two buildings at Canterbury will start today, but the big diggers won’t come in for a few weeks, until exams finish.

Politics Canterbury’s Therese Arseneau and Victoria’s Nigel Roberts speaking on MMP.

Bad EER…was the case for PTE Te Whare Wananga o Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa – it trains Maori Anglicans.

Ouch That’s about the best description I can think of for this review of Paul Moon’s (AUT) latest book. It’s not a complimentary review.

Flu on Crack… is how a Victoria student described measles.

Dehumidifiers Otago Uni academics have some very good advice on dehumidifiers here and here.

ArtBox CPIT is unveiling its ArtBox prototype today – it’s a great concept.

Bedroom Sharing Auckland students are apparently sharing bedrooms to save money on accommodation.

Rena Waikato’s Prof Alistair Wilkins has analysed the oil from the ship (TV3, NewstalkZB). Massey’s Brett Gartrell on helping the birds and sending a vet to East Cape.

Yeast The science escapes me a little by Massey’s Evelyn Sattlegger and collaborators have found out how some proteins interact (Auckland Now).

Gaddafi’s Death Auckland’s Robert Patman (actually Otago Uni – caption was wrong) on Gaddafi’s death (audio), plus Massey’s Nigel Parsons and Waikato’s Alexander Gillespie.

Rhodes Scholars…were announced on Friday. Congrats to Canterbury’s Andrew Dean, Auckland’s Max Harris and Waikato’s Briar Thompson.

Sporting Success? Massey and Manawatu could combine to create a youth sporting centre of excellence. Meanwhile AUT had the IOC president open their new training centre – points to AUT for the day!

RWC Before the Match Auckland’s Toni Bruce has found in a survey that many NZers find rugby a turnoff, but the data reported seems partial and the survey seems to be an open web-based one so who knows what the real feeling is?

The Rena Grounding shows again the great contribution that academics can make to both understanding and addressing problems, and the willingness of students to volunteer to help. Congrats to all those involved.

Quake Skateboard A Canterbury engineering student has designed a skateboard to deal with quake-created terrain.

Rena Grounding Over 1,000 birds have died and 130 have been rescued and are at the Massey-run rehab facility (they are contracted by Maritime NZ), included some birds collected proactively to avoid them getting in trouble (Manawatu Standard, 3 News, NZN). Massey’s Malcolm Wright on NZ’s branding and a student off to help on the ground. Waikato’s Willem de Lange offers some thoughts on the spread and impact of the oil slick and Chris Battershill on the oil dispersant used (media release about Waikato’s input). Chris Battershill has been doing so much he rang Canterbury’s Prof David Schiel to come up and help him (The Press). Bay of Plenty’s Poly’s Dean Tully on the long-term marine impacts, while a student and her peers are doing great with the Rena Kai Run to feed beach workers (including a FB page). Otago Uni’s Tom Brooking on other major environmental messes in New Zealand’s history, and a design student using ingenuity to pick up oil on the beach.

Tourism Dropped Otago Uni has dropped its tourism offering from a specialist degree to a major within the commerce degree, which is an interesting turnaround from the trend that grew in the 90s for degrees to have more specific names. A win for the traditionalists.

Compulsory English? It looks like NZQA might require PTEs to use an international test like IELTS to determine course entry, after many have offered dodgy assessments to boost course numbers (and subsequently award dubious qualifications).

Quake Stuff Waikato’s Gail Hutcheson is checking out why people moved from Christchurch to Hamilton; Canterbury’s Jarg Pettinga to give quake-related testimony, while other staff want longer training for structural engineers and better testing facilities.

Student Stuff OUSA president Logan Edgar easily won re-election (release), while ten top Uni teachers were named. Lincoln students had a big end of year Garden Party on Friday (The Press, which also covered the Canterbury Tea Party). An op-ed on VSM. The Waikato Times has a big article on the impact of VSM at Waikato and Wintec.

Child Witnesses Here’s a good overview of the work on child witnesses done by 5 AUT academics.

Cauliflower…cooking has got a Nelson and Napier students into the HSI national schools competition.

Dolphins Will Die…according to Otago Uni’s Liz Slooten after a change to fishing regulations.

What You Eat Otago Uni’s Winsome Parnell and AUT’s Elaine Rush on nutrition, and then Winsome Parnell and Massey’s Pam von Hurst on the importance of breakfast.

Protest More pics and video from the protest at Victoria, via the Workers Party (and more videos). The Dom Post wrote a story on the tensions between having a clear message and a broad church in this and other protests.

RWC Normally I only cover NZ tertiary education stuff, but this RWC marketing piece on The Conversation by Adam Karg at Deakin University is well worth a read (as is The Conversation as a whole, which is simply fabulous).
More on robots vs Mehrtens and one of the robots predicting an Aussie win over NZ (Dom Post, APNZ). Nadege Stoffel of Waikato is supporting her native France (as am I until they meet the ABs). Wintec officemates from NZ and Oz were bantering over the game.
Pregnant Students Immigration Minister Jonathan Coleman might drop a policy that means pregnant foreign students must go home (NZN).

Canterbury Staffing Canterbury is calling for staff to seek voluntary redundancy, which is likely to be a forerunner to compulsory redundancy for others.

Simulation Centre In a story crying out for photos, Auckland has opened a new patient simulation centre.

Nepal-NZ Lincoln’s David Simmons (and colleagues) was speaking at a tourism conference in Nepal recently.

Claire Robinson …is the new head of Massey’s College of Creative Arts, but she’s still talking politics as well.

Telford Head The new head of Telford is Prof Charles Lamb, from October 10.

Missed the Point In a long op-ed on Scoop that only I and 3 other people will read, Auckland’s Mark Amsler criticises VC Stuart McCutcheon’s characterisation of last week’s protest at Auckland as confused. I think McCutcheon was quite right, in that the protest had 3 (3!) purposes, none of which were reinforced by walking to the top floor of an atrium, where one of the most prominent banners was Solidarity Aotearoa. The visual images and the spokespeople did not put across a clear purpose for the protest, and an abiding image was protestors surrounding a police car. It was, however, the high point in a series of quite weak protests against the VSM Bill at about five sites around the country. OUSA’s Critic newspaper had a headline yesterday about a 35 person protest there that put it well: “0.00175% of students get fired up. Government unmoved.” To be fair, there were no events in support of the Bill, other than small parties after the Bill’s passing.

Lower Crime Canterbury’s Greg Newbold on much lower Canterbury crime (and a follow-up). Victoria’s Prof John Pratt says a national drop in crime is to do with a drop in the number of young men and better security. Victoria’s Trevor Bradley thinks it may just be a blip.

Minibikes Competenz is helping school students participate in a minibike challenge.

Academic Challenged Michael Cox has written an op-ed criticising Waikato’s Prof Roger Moltzen for criticising national standards. I liked how Cox didn’t like Moltzen saying that the policy “is possibly the beginning of the slippery slide” without any justification, whereas 4 paras before Cox wrote that behaviours like Moltzen’s “can only lead to anarchy”. Slippery slopes are everywhere.

AgExcel Four new providers have received the AgExcel quality mark: Waiariki, Wintec, BOPP and NMIT.

RWC Victoria’s Marc Wilson makes another inane comment on the psychological impact of Dan Carter’s injury – sometimes you should turn down reporters. In the meantime, Auckland sociologist Campbell Jones was writing an op-ed against rugby ads. A US flight school owner is here for the RWC and looking to buy or set up a flight school.

Short Bits Victoria: John Hine testing Internet speed; international award for Prof Peter Barrett; profile of new school of government head Peter Hughes.
Massey Teacher Ed Massey is planning to phase out 3-4 year teacher education primary/ECE courses at undergrad level and replace them with a one year postgrad programme, and NZEI and students are upset (NZEI, NZEI Young and New Members, Manawatu Standard).

Vic Solar Bach The solar bach from Victoria gained 3rd place overall (out of 19 teams) at the Washington DC competition (Dom Post). They won first place in the engineering section (TV3, release, Scoop) and second place in the architecture section. I’m happy they did well as this may have had the most media releases of any story over the last year or so.

Back It Up Auckland VC Stuart McCutcheon has apparently told academics to back up their statements if they’re using academic freedom as a defence.

Vibrators Waikato’s Gaye Pool has been trying to find antique vibrators for a play.

Languages International… is back in its Christchurch CBD building after quake repairs have been completed and the cordon reduces (release).

RWC Peter Lineham’s rugby as religion idea got coverage on a Stuff Blog and a story (he’s from Massey). AUT’s Duncan Reid on Dan Carter’s injury. Auckland’s David Scott reckons a stats prediction for the ABs to win could be kosher.

Putaruru Opportunity A Putaruru development sis to include a rural education centre – let them know if you want the space.

VSM Chris Trotter wrote a bizarre piece on how VSM was going to drive a revolutionary class struggle or something. A student criticised Steven Joyce. An editorial in The Press says VSM was inevitable. Massey put up its student services fee to account for VSM (Massey), by exactly the same amount as the students assn fee (plus 5% inflation!).

Canterbury…has a shortfall of $12-18m. The Uni has launched its big 2012 scholarship scheme and also publicly thanked its scholarship supporters. The staff club can be repaired after quake damage.

Women’s Moods Otago Uni’s Prof Sarah Romans has been looking into how women’s moods are affected by the menstrual cycle.

20 Years Max Abbott has been recognised for his 20 years of dean of health up at AUT.

Measles A Victoria student got measles and other students are being contacted. The student also went to a Dunedin hostel (ODT).

Sustainability Massey’s Mike Joy had a go at an eel fisher and reckons NZers have too good a view about our water quality via a Lincoln survey, while the Greens thought the survey justified an irrigation charge. Labour’s Brendon Burns reckons John Key misquoted a Lincoln academic over water quality.

Short Bits AUT: student in running for Rhythm and Vines role; Style Pasifika student entry; Rawiri Taonui on race and police; old people don’t feel old; media ownership report; Venture Fun winner sounds cool.

An old friend from an English language school sent through a Middle Eastern student’s enquiry the other day:

dear sirs

we are interest to study English in New Zealand also war

we will study in your school…

The staff considered it internally, suggesting that if the student managed to gather a class of 7 students, the school could organise a war. Since NZQA requires an assessment of students’ suitability, they also realised they might first need to check on students’ previous experience in wars.

In the end the school couldn’t offer the course, but did check with colleagues about whether schools offered the option. Maybe it could be something for Education NZ to check out as they seek to double export education income J

I’m providing behind the scenes support to the Industry Training Federation for a day or two per week until they appoint a new Executive Director.
Export Ed to Double? Steven Joyce released an international education leadership statement yesterday, focusing on doubling income over 15 years (TV3, NewstalkZB, NBR). ENZ welcomed the statement. Inflation should help, because the $5b target doesn’t seem to be inflation adjusted – 2% inflation would get the government a third of the way.

Dodgy Surveillance Law Vic’s Dean Knight is cited here opposing the government’s proposed retrospective law, while this story cites him, Otago Uni’s Andrew Geddis and Canterbury’s Philip Joseph all opposing the law. Good on them.

Snapper Food Prof David Raubenheimer, who we have previously met in the Himalayas on a horse, is now checking out the diet of snapper and there’s even a video (but no horse this time).

Animal Health There’s a dog cancer treatment trial being run by Massey’s Jonathan Bray and Otago Poly is running a pet weight loss programme.

Fires Palmie authorities are said to “condemn fire-crazy mob” although few would welcome such a thing. Anyway, looks like students may have been involved, but an editorial says students shouldn’t just be blamed.

ITO Completions A very rare story on ITO completions covers the Agriculture ITO’s work and associated issues.

Skills Shortage? Competenz reckons that a skills shortage is looming and that firms need to train.

Quieter Classes Natasha Perkins of Victoria is researching how to make primary school classrooms quieter (Dom Post).

Iwi Creativity A Massey competition to encourage Maori students to explore their iwi connections has turned up some good art. I like Taupuru Brightwell’s take on Wellington Zoo.

WorldSkills Brad Wood, a Competenz apprentice, getting ready for WorldSKills.

Tech Start-up Massey’s Steve Corbett reckons it’s the right time for technology start-ups (NewstalkZB).

Wood Some visiting experts in building with wood like NMIT’s new building.

RWC Victoria’s Marc Wilson and AUT’s Nigel Hemmington on trans-Tasman rivalry.
