Most readers will have seen far too many stories on the Christchurch quake, so I will focus on some key ones that relate to tertiary education. King’s Education The missing students (there are also 9 staff missing) include 26 from Japan, 14 from China, 7 from the Philippines, 3 from Thailand, 1 from Korea and 1 from the Czech… Read Full Story.

Kings Education An address to family members yesterday by the two directors of the company is online. It details the number of students and staff involved in the school at the time (125) – of that number 44 were safe, 46 were believed in the building and 35 were status unknown. I am impressed by the address as… Read Full Story.

It is with a very heavy heart that I announce what I feared from Tuesday afternoon. 46 (updated at 4.30pm, was 48 earlier today) King’s Education students and staff are thought to be in the CTV building and are believed to have perished. Another 35 (was 42) students are status unknown – they could well have moved on… Read Full Story.

I’m doing most updates through ED’s Facebook and Twitter accounts at the moment, as most news is now in small bites. The main development is that the Police now believe that the damage and fire at the CTV building is no longer surviveable (4.19pm update) so it seems unlikely that any more King’s Education staff and students will be rescued from there. Rescuers… Read Full Story.

I have an update on King’s Education, via The Press, where the CTV Building it was in collapsed. Two Japanese teachers and 21 students were there (from Toyama College of Foreign Languages in Japan). A teacher emailed out from the rubble and has since been rescued, but 12 of those students were unaccounted for. A male NZ teacher… Read Full Story.

I hope your family and friends are safe and well after the Christchurch earthquake yesterday. My closest friends and family are safe but an old colleague from the tertiary sector worked in the first floor of the collapsed CTV building – I hope he is OK. The post today will start with quake news and then cover some… Read Full Story.

There has been an enormous quake in Chch (GeoNet) and those checking websites and TV will have seen some very disturbing images. And the PM just confirmed 65 deaths, with more likely to come. As with the last quake in September, I will be updating tertiary education news as it becomes available. I’ll just use this post today so come back to the site and look again if you’re getting this… Read Full Story.

Aoraki Student Walkout? While the staff-management dispute was a problem, it seems that dozens of students might put in withdrawal notices from Aoraki’s outdoor education class today. The Timaru Herald has 20 students in a photo in its story who will withdraw. This is the nightmare scenario, but it would have been pretty amazing if Aoraki could have… Read Full Story.

“Question: How do you get the country’s eight universities to co-operate? Answer: Turn off the funding tap. That was the gist of a cheeky crack last week from entrepreneur, scientist and former New Zealander of the Year Sir Ray Avery, at an event showcasing the fruits of university R&D. It got a good laugh, both from the academics… Read Full Story.

School Leaver Gap? Is there a gap in provision for those who pass NCEA (and thus are not eligible for Youth Training etc) but cannot get into university/polytechnic? Dunedin Methodists think there is and are setting up a specialist programme but I’m not so sure that there’s a big problem there. Any thoughts from readers? Paul Callaghan There’s… Read Full Story.
