Well, it is that time of year when bouquets and brickbats are awarded by all those journos and bloggers who can’t be bothered generating new content, so I thought I should do the same for tertiary education. My colleague Marina Matthews provided assistance, but I’ll take any criticism you may wish to offer. Best Policy The release of… Read Full Story.

Uni Entry John Gerritsen at RNZ did a story yesterday on tougher university entry rules, focusing on the University of Canterbury, with input from NZUSA. UCOL Challenged An opinion piece in the Wanganui Chronicle has challenged UCOL’s intentions for their local campus. While the writer reads like they are a bit paranoid and odd, it does reflect concern about recent downsizing. In the same… Read Full Story.

Hair is Tops The Hairdressing ITO is celebrating its good results in the ITO performance data release. Coincidentally I popped down to their new offices yesterday and they’re looking good. They’ve shifted next door and they’re doing it up nicely. (BTW they’re in the city fringe not a flash high-rise.) University Entry A story in The Press today could bear a lot of analysis. It… Read Full Story.

Careerforce and the Social Services ITO have agreed to explore the concept of a merger, after announcing collaboration talks a few months back. They haven’t approved a merger yet, but I’d say it was a done deal once they jump through the hoops of industry and regulatory approval. I’ve provided the key media release excerpts below. Dr Rory Truell, Chief Executive of the Social Services ITO,… Read Full Story.

Flight Training There will be a flight training review due to concerns over lots of accidents. One trainer blames the student loan scheme for fuelling high numbers and poor quality (and I think we’ll hear a bit more of that…). UCOL Cuts…due to $600K lower funding in 2011 won’t affect their Whanganui campus too much. Meanwhile six parties are trying to get UCOL’s old gym. Kids Get Trikes Last week I mentioned stolen… Read Full Story.

A US State Department cable on export education in NZ has been released via WikiLeaks, with a focus on the reasons for the decline in Chinese enrolments at that time. The NZ Herald published it but I have pasted the full text below. Most of the cable is not new to those involved in export education issues in NZ in 2005 –… Read Full Story.

ITO Data Out TEC released the ITO performance data yesterday (also Steven Joyce media release). I might write a bit about it later. ATTTO welcomed them – they did well. Uni Places Grant Robertson put out a pointed media release asking Steven Joyce to explain why Otago Uni first year places were going down. It’s a good political angle, but the obvious reason is… Read Full Story.

TEC released funding details on Tuesday. I’ve done a full analysis for ED Insider. but I thought the following table might interest you all as the Minister’s and TEC’s releases didn’t provide clear totals. As you can see, sector funding has gone up a little, but there has been a big shift from the ITOs and (to a less extent) the ITPs… Read Full Story.

First Year Cut Otago Uni has cut its first year intake by 224 as it seeks to manage its overall numbers. New Visa Rules New immigration rules will make it easier for international students (media release).
