News 8/9 – Staff Working Bees to Clean Up After Quake

September 8th 2010 at 7:49am, By Dave Guerin

Education performance information will be released by TEC at 11am today. ED have some embargoed figures so we’ll publish a post at 11am.

  1. Quake Update
    • Aftershocks are slowing down building checkups (and requiring new checks), which in turn are delaying the cleanup. However, Canterbury Uni is having a (voluntary) staff working bee starting at noon today – although read the notice because not everyone starts straight away. SIT’s staff are back now and students tomorrow. Tai Poutini’s Digger School students are back at the quarry. Avonmore has some staff back today and others soon, with students to follow. UPDATE: 8.57am CPIT has just advised they are closed until further notice – presumably due to the major aftershock this morning.
    • Victoria Uni is running a public lecture on earthquakes this week.
    • Academics were mentioned in stories on children’s stress (Massey), children’s stress again (Massey), general stress (Massey), quake tracking (Canterbury) and banking (Massey).
  2. Trades Academy A Northland trades academy will open up pathways to Lincoln Uni and Telford Rural Polytechnic.
  3. Rugby World Cup Black Ferns captain and Rugby World Cup winner Farah Palmer is a senior lecturer in sports management at Massey University. They should organise a parade for her!
  4. Literacy Day Yesterday was International Literacy Day (who knew?) and some Aoraki Poly students talked to locals about literacy.
  5. Otago Poly Staff Otago Poly is cutting 20 staff/15.2 FTEs as it seeks to operate within budget.
  6. Media Mentions AUT’s Paul Moon is commenting on the new approach to the foreshore and seabed, while an Auckland Uni academic comments on company directors.
  7. Fashion A Bay of Plenty Polytechnic student, Sarah Friis, won the evening-wear category at the Westfield Style Pasifika New Zealand Fashion Awards. A UCOL student did well too.
  8. Say Rhubarb WITT chefs are cooking with rhubarb.
