News 7/9 – Quake Photos and Info Plus Massey Website

Quake News (more details at this post from yesterday, but the following info is an update)
- Lincoln University gave everyone a week’s extension on assignments. Their website is back up and running with comprehensive info and photos. Their Memorial Hall has major damage (see photo at left), but other buildings will be able to be fixed relatively easily.
- Here’s a story on the University of Canterbury, which has had major damage to a collection of Roman and Greek antiquities. You can read much much more and see photos at the University of Canterbury’s website - check out the photo above of an office at the Uni – lucky no-one was at the computer!
- CPIT will be reopening on Thursday.
- Tao Poutini Poly’s MAINZ classes are off for two weeks, Scaffolding for 1 week and Digger School students should call their programme coordinator but classes are cancelled Mon-Tue this week.
- Otagu Uni has updated their quake info.
- KAREN’s AVCC video conferencing helpdesk is closed until 13 Sep, as it is based at the University of Canterbury.
- OUSA is considering making a reverse Undie 500 to bring aid to Canterbury students.
- Taranaki students at Canterbury are trying to get back to Uni.
- Media Mentions RE Quake Academics have been in the media on the Chch quake, covering issues such as: unreinforced masonry structures (Vic); whether Auckland could be next (Auckland) or Invercargill (Otago); ground liquefaction (Auckland); fault movement (Canterbury); Dunedin fault lines (Otago); building standards (Massey) and risk management planning (Auckland).
- Bad English Massey University was a finalist in the people’s choice “brainstrain” website categoryin the Writemark Plain English Awards. The nomination was for this intro to a comms degree:
- “The Bachelor of Communication brings together the Communication Management, Journalism Studies, Marketing Communication and Public Relations programmes from the College of Business, and the Expressive Arts, International Languages, Linguistics and Media Studies programmes from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, into an integrated, comprehensive and unique three-year degree.”
- Mayoral Idea A Nelson Mayoral candidate wants to run a regional jobs summit and involve NMIT amongst others.
- Bits and Pieces Whale research by Otago Uni has helped to track a whale. An Otago Uni academic comments on the value of DHB elections (ED consultant David Choat is standing in Wellington BTW, so Wellingtonians should check him out). NorthTec’s Culinary Fare winners are featured here.
