News 30/8 – ITO Vision. Angry Council. Telford Expansion?

August 30th 2010 at 10:00am, By Dave Guerin

  1. Forestry Vision ITOs are covered so rarely in the media, but the NZ Herald had a good story today on FITEC and its work with other ITOs to set up the Primary Industries Trade Academy, but the story also  has a wider focus on how industry skills need will be met. In a similar vein, there’s a very long story on an open day organised by the Agriculture ITO in the ODT.
  2. Angry Council Otago Poly Council members were angry and/or concerned last week about the roll cap they are having to implement.
  3. Hacking Auckland Some student information may have been improperly accessed at the University of Auckland after a server was hacked into.
  4. Massey Cleaners Here’s a story on the cleaners’ dispute at Massey and a later one that shows that Massey is getting involved.
  5. Cheating @ Waikato There’s a follow-up story on last week’s coverage of cheating at university – this one focuses on the University of Waikato.
  6. Telford Telford might set up a fulltime residential course on Great Barrier Island. A L3 equine courses with a completion rate of under 30% is leading to a review of correspondence courses – it seems that there are no strong entry criteria. Telford Rural Poly’s fees are going up 4% next year.
  7. $#%$ Lecture Victoria is hosting an Australian academic for 3 lectures, one of which will be on swearing.
  8. Sports Centre Otago Poly likes the idea of a sports analysis centre in Dunedin.
  9. Bits and Pieces Massey and Otago students and staff have been involved in the examination of a beached whale in Dunedin. The first Masters of Dance student has graduates from the University of Otago, which makes me think about the tensions between broad and specific qualification names (but not for long enough to make a comment on it). NMIT chefs provide advice on cooking hapuku. A Massey grad has won an international design award for the second year running. A Massey student’s play is being performed. A Media Design School course leader is involved in a NZ’s Next Top Model photo retouching story. Massey University clinical psychologist Ian de Terte commented on Feilding’s responses to recent deaths. AUT students and staff were cooking cupcakes yesterday for an SPCA fundraiser. A teacher at the University of Otago was killed after being hit by a truck. Education NZ is going to the Court of Appeal to protect its charitable status (NB small mention at end of story). Some old ink bottles were found during excavations at Wintec. A Unitec student is off to Australia’s National Student Leadership Forum Summit in Sydney next month.
