News 25/8 – Lincoln-Telford Merger & Stolen Websites

August 25th 2010 at 7:35am, By Dave Guerin

  1. Lincoln and Telford The merger proposal is moving on, with the Minister calling for submissions on a  formal proposal and the institutions releasing details. Stories have been published by NZPA and the ODT.
  2. TEU Won’t Sue NMIT…well, this time anyway
  3. Free Flat “I am very proud to welcome these fine students to UC Accommodation Student Village”, said regular ED Blog commenter Darel Hall as he gave away a  flat to five CPIT students for a year.
  4. Stolen Websites A Chinese firm seems to have stolen material from NZ tertiary education provider websites and created their own sites, with the agent’s details - The Press has the story.
  5. Massey’s Cleaners Labour MP Darien Fenton is supporting Massey Uni’s cleaners.
  6. Sir Graham Liggins RIP Leading researcher Sir Graham Liggins has died. Sir Peter Gluckman has written an obituary.
  7. Toque D’Or CPIT won, but UCOL got an innovation award for their chilli and chocolate sausage.
  8. Bits and Pieces An architect working on VUW’s Te Puni Village project has won an award for a world-first seismic bracing system. An education expert from The University of Auckland has been selected to represent New Zealand in an international working group tasked with transforming education systems. Ecology lecturer at Massey University, Mike Joy, is quoted in a story on the Manawatu River. Otago Poly’s snowsports course is full. OUSA’s elections have been reported upon by the returning officer. Staying at Otago Uni, a part-time medical researcher disciplined for poor patient care will keep his role.
  9. Lone Tree The picture at left is by UCOL lecturer Kaye Davis and won the Nature section of the internationally acclaimed Photography Masters Cup. It’s a lovely picture. Two other UCOL lecturers (one present, one past) are finalists in the NZ Wallace Awards.
  10. Dance Check out contemporary dance at Unitec from today.
  11. Catching Fish I was going to give this story about Auckland Uni research on tuna a lot of coverage but the media release was just too dull and long.
  12. WITT’s Mushrooms A WITT chef is cooking mushrooms, which reminds me of their old Crown commissioner, who said the Council used to be treated like mushrooms (if you read yesterday’s news post, you’ll see they’re now more involved).
