News 19/8 – Free Flat, Telford’s Boozers and Cuts Trimmed

Free Flat My mate Darel Hall is giving away rent on a 5-bedroom flat for a year, worth $40,000. He’s not made of money, especially when it’s his round at the pub (he’s not that bad really), but he heads up Campus Living Villages’ operation down at the University of Canterbury and it’s a good competition for students.
Telford’s Boozers Every place has them, but Telford Rural Polytechnic students have got around an on-campus drinking ban by drinking down by the river. Unfortunately, they seem to have stolen some tyres and burned them, along with other anti-social behaviour.
Totara Falls Respected Ngati Porou academic and historian Te Kapunga Matemoana, or “Koro” Dewes, has passed away at the age of 80.
Cuts Trimmed Massey has trimmed proposed support staff job cuts from 53 to 28. NMIT is keeping its adventure tourism courses, but putting them on probation (they will have to improve course rates and raise cost coverage from 30% to 50%). Creative writing was cut and here’s some reaction.
TWOA Boxing Kawerau’s Te Wananga o Aotearoa students took on other community groups in a boxing exhibition to raise money for charity.
League Game The New Zealand Universities and Tertiary Students Rugby League side will play this Saturday against New Zealand Maori at Ngaruawahia.
Work Experience EIT is working with Work and Income and the Hastings District Council on a work experience scheme - sounds like a very good idea.
Otago Uni Corner
- Otago Uni got a little money for prostate cancer screening reserach and is involved in a trans-Tasman research programme on defence force personnel, veterans and thier families.
- A citizens’ jury research project has looked at attitudes to sharing health data for research purposes.
- Here’s a story on the printer-in-residence at the bibliography room at the University of Otago Library. It is a cool space and programme – check it out if you’re down that way.
- Animated Research Ltd (ARL) managing director Ian Taylor wants to turn Dunedin into the world’s leading sports analysis centre, working with Otago Uni.
- OUSA has done quite a cool artwork to promote their student loan concerns.
Bits and Pieces A NorthTec tutor is off to an artists’ symposium in New Caledonia. Three SIT students are looking forward to the Nestle Toque d’Or cooking competition. The Uni of Auckland is thinking about running 3 exams a day during exam season, with one in the evening. An AUT professor has slammed the Auckland Super City.
