News 17/8 – Whitireia Again, Trades Academies & PM on NMIT

  1. Whitireia $$ If you want to know more about the money missing from Whitireia Independent Stduents’ Assn, the Newswire site managed by the polytechnic’s journalism students is a good start. They had stories yesterday on police comment, aggrieved students, an exec member’s reaction, an interview with Poly CE Don Campbell, a summary of other associations’ problems and a statement from Poly CE Don Campbell. The Dom Post had an editorial on it this morning, backing VSM, and stories yesterday on angry students and missing assets, and today on how $244K was paid over in June 2010 but now seems to be missing. TVNZ had a story yesterday too. And there was a second post at Kiwiblog.
  2. Trades Academies Announced 9 Trades Academies were announced yesterday. Wintec, Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre, WelTec and CPIT seem to be leading four of them.
  3. Farm Training The Agriculture ITO is rolling out a training programme in effluent management for farmers.
  4. Climate Change Some academics have supported NIWA over the legal challenge it is facing over temperature records.
  5. Spring Otago Poly horticulture students are out doing spring planting.
  6. Defending Apprentices The Defence Force has made a deal to provide some supervised trade supervision for apprentices that lose their jobs, as long as they join the Reserves. Sounds sensible enough,
  7. PM on NMIT John Key has questioned why NMIT’s adventure tourism course may be closed, although it seemed to be an aside than a major concern.
  8. Research and Innovation Festivals WelTec and CPIT are holding events to show off their research and innovation work.
  9. Uni Competitors University Sport NZ has some results up from the World University Rowing Champs. A Waikato Uni student is taking part in the International Olympiad in Informatics.

Interesting media spin on the closure of the NMIT adventure tourism course. The PM states that he doesn’t know why the course is being closed.

The spin is that it looks like the PM is questioning the need to close the course. On reading his comment it would appear that he just doesn’t know why the course is being closed. There is no judgement here, he just doesn’t know why.

The trouble here is that it is pretty unusual for a senior politician to suggest that he/she doesn’t know something.

I think you’re right Jim. John Key often disarms people by taking the open approach that many people do in real life, but few do in politics. I imagine he just got asked about it out of the blue and gave an honest answer.
