News 16/7 – Joyce Day II, Wintec Carpark and TEU Corner

  1. Joyce’s Ripples The ripples from Joyce’s speech continue to expand. Nelson teaching students, studying with the University of Canterbury, are happy with Joyce’s look at student services fees. They had already protested, and seemingly gained a reduction, in Canterbury’s fees, given that most of their time is spent in Nelson, where Canterbury has very few services. The story also quotes NMIT’s CE, Tony Gray, saying that he reserves the right to introduce such fees in future. NZVCC Chair Derek McCormack was quoted in an NZPA story opposing the use of graduate outcomes in funding decisions, as well as a 95bfm interview (Auckland student radio). Steven Joyce was also on Morning Report yesterday about the issue. Then, this morning on graduate outcomes, the Dom Post finds a concerned philosophy student (is there any other type?) , the ODT reports that Otago Poly CE Phil Ker dismissed the idea as impractical,  and the NZ Herald has the main story plus some comments from the ITF’s Jeremy Baker.
  2. Joyce’s Blast Steven Joyce blasted poor Kiwi literacy rates yesterday at an adult literacy and numeracy symposium.
  3. Uni Funding I forgot to mention that last Saturday there was a good debate on TV3′s The Nation programme about university funding – here’s the video and transcript.
  4. Wintec Carpark Wintec is building a 257 space carpark over 5.5 levels for $5m, to be ready in early 2011. Apparently the foundation will be equivalent to the volume of 240 elephants, if that helps your understanding…
  5. TEU Corner Check out the TEU’s newsletter this week (always a good read and well worth a subscription). They have reaction to Joyce’s speech plus the ratification of the ITP MECA. They also point out a discrepancy between Joyce’s public statements about enrolments levelling off and what the Budget papers say.
  6. Student Leader There’s a good profile of UCOL student president Jo Hymers in the Manawatu Standard. She’s stepping down after three years.
  7. Labour Rant Labour’s Raymond Huo has a bit of a rant at the Government’s loans, allowances and funding changes.
  8. Power Saver An Auckland company has worked with AUT to develop a technology that generates power from cars driving over it - it is being trialled in Singapore.
  9. Moko Mystery Massey vets couldn’t identify the cause of death of Moko the dolphin.
  10. Learner Success MIT students have an exhibition in Pakuranga from July 24. University of Auckland students have just participated in an environmentally friendly housing competition. Two Media Design School students won the Ad Students Newspaper Ad of the Year Award. Weltec students have launched a new arts magazine.
  11. Prison Learning Youth prisoners in Christchurch are learning lots. Radio NZ covered it too.
  12. Young Farmers I forgot to mention earlier in the week that Lincoln grads took places 1, 2 and 3 in the Young Farmer competition last weekend.
  13. Free PropertyOtago has had a bequest consisting of several buldings, including some they already rent.

What a terrible idea: Employment rates by institution made available to students, employers and the wider world. Surely to God the world would end.

I attach a full list of employment rates for every United Kingdom university (by institution so it could be more useful I grant you) … in a newspaper. And a left-wing one at that. Enjoy. And yes it is depressing that you will no more about employment rates at the University of East Anglia than you do about Aoraki Polytechnic.
