News 12/7 – Waikato Uni Shuts Door
July 12th 2010 at 8:33am, By Dave Guerin
- Waikato Uni Shuts Door…to any more students in 2010, with 470 turned away for the second semester. 500, here, 1,000 there and pretty soon you have some big numbers that add up much like a hip replacement waiting list for a government. Maybe the government should have a strategy beyond shrugs.
- Wintec Opens Door …to India, with the first two interns from the Indian Institute of Technology set to become ambassadors for NZ agribusiness when they came home. While it probably won’t lead to a boom in sales, it’s an important piece of relationship building for that other enormous market in Asia besides China.
- Massey Staff Cuts The Manawatu Daily Standard has run two stories about staff cuts at Massey about cleaners and admin staff. It seems that Massey is looking hard for efficiencies across its campuses and this follows on from earlier decisions to have one level of senior management.
- NZUSA Conference Steven Joyce said he was still making up his mind about VSM (while in Dunedin, he also checked out a Youth Guarantee programme at Otago Polytechnic). Sharn Riggs of the TEU also spoke to the conference – here’s her speech.
- ITP MECA Settled …according to TEU Twitter.
- Moko the Dolphin Massey vets are checking out Moko the dolphin’s body for the cause of death – longer story here.
- Learner Success University of Auckland students won first and third prize in the Kerikeri Piano Competition (bigger than it sounds). A Massey University student became Miss Manawatu. A New World Alexandra butcher is off to the Retail Meat ITO’s national apprentice competition, while the Wellington winner also made the news.. The University of Auckland’s OneBeep team came third, out of 68 teams, at the Microsoft Imagine Cup software competition in Poland. A great result for them and for their great idea – read more and University’s release here). And Victoria Uni has now put out a release about its students’ debating win - it was 8-1, not the 6-3 result that Auckland stated (which came second). Three University of Canterbury grads are designing cable wakeboarding parks.
- Motor Racing A Japanese NorthTec student was one of many volunteering at the International Rally of Whangarei last week but she ended up being the interpreter for visiting Japanese motorsport officials.
- Wine Two stories on one of my favourite topics: a Canterbury Uni student is running a National Wine Tourism Survey; and a University of Auckland study has been interpreted as pointing to a Napa-Valley type future for Central Otago (I’ve been to both and I’d say not).
- Stuart Middleton…writes about attrition and retention this week.
- Sex Research I ran a note in May about a Massey student’s call for sex addicts to participate in research – well, over 800 people put their hands up. A Massey lecturer was also in Queenstown at the weekend talking about sex and passion- maybe it’s Steve Maharey’s influence as VC.
- Learn Mandarin The PM was talking at the weekend about the need for more NZers to learn Mandarin (it’s a long transcript).
- Water Study Canterbury and Lincoln Universities have set up a joint Waterways Centre and Nick Smith opened it on Friday. It has ESIF funding from TEC. A release from Canterbury has a bit more detail.
- Lincoln Corner Lincoln was almost guaranteed of success in the Young Farmer of the Year competition at the weekend, with six out of seven finalists holding Lincoln quals. And the winner was…Lincoln Grad Grant McNaughton (who is looking forward to getting back to work). Here’s another Young Farmer story. Lincoln has also appointed two existing staff to professorial level - in soil science and rural sociology.
- E-Learning Management magazine has a piece on e-learning, focusing on business applications.
- Short Film A Te Wananga o Raukawa teacher (and Massey PhD student) has had success with a short film, along with his brother.
- Final Warning A bar on Massey University’s ALbany campus has had a warning for inappropriate promotions.
- Hoop Dreams An NMIT scholarship scheme has helped keep a basketballer with the Nelson Giants.
