News 9/7 – Is Massey Going to Get Dirty?

July 9th 2010 at 8:20am, By Dave Guerin

  1. Massey Dirty, For Sale? The Service and Food Workers’ Union is protesting a proposed major cut in cleaning at Massey University. Hours will be cut generally and there will be a term-time cleaning focus, with only 31 weeks of the year guaranteed for work (presumably some staff will clean year round). Massey is also selling its Hotel St George’s hostel and surrounding land in Wellington - the Beatles once stayed there!
  2. CPIT-NMIT …are apparently going to collaborate more and the Minister has congratulated them, but since the institutions themselves didn’t put out a media release with any details from what I can see, the Minister’s release falls a bit flat.
  3. TEU Concerned As predicted yesterday, someone was concerned about the Minister leaning on TEC about UCOL’s Glass School.  The TEU argued in its newsletter that the Minister shouldn’t be leaning on the TEC but also shouldn’t be encouraging the establishment of a PTE from a public provider.
  4. Super City Unitec’s running a series of panel discussions on the Super City.
  5. Otago Corner The University of Otago is trying to facilitate a microscope exhibition – best to read the release. Another University team has recreated the face of a 2,500 year old Turkish peasant - I wasn’t interested enough to find out why. An Otago Poly staffer is helping to bring biodiesel to Dunedin - tenders close in August.
  6. China Visit Two Gateway Antarctica postgrad students at the University of Canterbury are off to…Wuhan in China, as part of a Christchurch friendship city programme (guess the city councillors thought it would be a bad look to go themselves this close to an election!).
  7. Debating The Uni of Auckland has put out a release celebrating their second-placed debating team at the Australasian champs, They say it was a close decision, with Vic winning by 3 points, but Kiwiblog puts it at 8-1. You decide!
  8. Rugby WC Waiariki Institute of Technology may hire out its marae for accommodation during the Rugby World Cup.
  9. Dance Award Gaylene Sciascia, Performing Arts Manager of Whitireia Community Polytechnic, has received an award for her Outstanding Contribution to Maori Contemporary Dance.
  10. Hamilton PropertyA University of Waikato academic has done a study of property in the Waikato.
  11. Building A Northland apprentice is getting ready to go to the national champs in Queenstown.
