News 8/6 – MOE the Worst(?), Uni Access Chaos & Congrats to Stuart

June 8th 2010 at 7:59am, By Dave Guerin

  1. MOE at Bottom Trans-Tasman, which usually produces a weekly politics and policy newsletter, has produced a ranking of all government departments and has ranked the Ministry of Education near the bottom.
  2. Access Chaos Palmerston North schools are warning of chaos and confusion due to changes to entry rules for university. Meanwhile, the University of Otago will be putting limits on its summer school programmes.
  3. Student Support The Otago Daily Times had an editorial yesterday supporting the Budget changes to student support, and suggesting they go further to include interest on student loans.
  4. International Students Kerre Woodham wrote an opinion piece on the Herald on Sunday about the challenges facing people supporting young international students and the risks they and the students will face.
  5. Wine and Music Winners Daisy Dawson, PhD student and Lincoln University, is one of two winners of an international wine scholarship. She’s going to look at “place-based marketing and cross-branding for wine tourism and wine sales from the perspective of winery owners and managers in the South Island” – hmm, I wonder if I could put a similar research trip on my expenses. At the University of Otago, a young singer is making the most of his scholarship.
  6. HSI Awards The ODT has a profile of a finalist in the Hospitality Standards Institute’s Modern Apprentice of the Year competition.
  7. Skills Roadshow A skills roadshow in Taranaki next week will take 70 school 13-14 year old students around 10 employers - it’s a good idea and is organised by the Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs, with support from  WITT, ACC, DOL and Career Services.
  8. Otago Buildings The University of Otago is expanding the library at the old College of Education, which also acts as the main library for Otago Polytechnic students. The ODT has an opinion piece about whether the University of Otago shoud be concentrated or dispersed in the footprint of its buildings.
  9. Russell and his first deerHunting You might think the photo is just about hunting, but it illustrates a media release about NorthTec’s Professional Hunting and Pest Control Certificate. That’s student Russell Green with his first deer – he’s thinking of setting up a pest control company with fellow students when he graduates.
  10. Honours for Stuart Middleton  Stuart Middleton has been made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit for services to education – well-deserved honour in my view. Sir David Levene, besides being successful in business, also supported a Massey University scholarship and an AUT mentoring scheme.
  11. Good Orientation Massey University’s Orientation at Palmerston North seems to have made money and been enjoyable.
