News 21/5 – Budget, Budget & Gondolas

May 21st 2010 at 10:51am, By Dave Guerin

  1. Budget Announcement Steven Joyce has put out two key releases on student support and new places (the latter link was working yesterday but access is now “forbidden” – maybe there are no new places after all…). TEC Budget info is here.
  2. Budget Reaction
    • The NZ Herald has a story today on student reaction to the Budget. David Do of NZUSA uses medical and dentistry students as an example where high fees could drive graduates overseas etc, but medical bonding is now so generous that people get their loans paid down quite quickly – time for a new example! James Buwalda also welcomes the extra EFTS for ITPs, but notes the  funding cuts in 2011 announced in 2009.
    • The Press’ story focuses mainly on schools and ECE, but has a negative rating for the Budget from Rod Carr of Canterbury University.
    • The Dom Post had a basic education sector overview story, while NZPA rounded up some quotes from NZUSA and TEU.
    • WITT’s Richard Handley hopes WITT will get some of the new ITP EFTS.
    • Auckland University Students’ Assn is concerned about fee rises as their fees were at the top of the range already and could only go up by inflation previously (although they haven’t noted that postgrad fees will now be constrained more).
    • The ITF welcome some extra $$ when times are tight.
    • NZUSA criticise a low increase in places, but are more focused on tighter student loan access and changes to fee maxima.
    • The TEU states that an austere budget limits potential.
    • The Green’s Gareth Hughes has put out a pretty dopey release mainly about how performance funding will automatically lead to substandard students being passed. I guess it plays to his base, but who would print it, other than to criticise it, like this.
  3. Undie 500 Canterbury students continue to look for a Marlborough venue for their Undie 500 party, while locals circle the wagons to deter the outsiders. The Police will oppose any liquor license, which is open-minded, since they don’t have the application yet…
  4. Gondola, Gondola! The Palmerston North gondola is not dead yet. The local council will consider the issue “within the next two months” while 56% of locals think it will be awesome, compared to 44% that think it will be ridiculous. 0% sent in a cheque…
  5. AUT Sports AUT is expanding its partnership with the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health.
