News 12/5 – Science Funding and Student Caps

  1. Budget Science Boost John Key announced $321m of science funding yesterday (more over at ED Insider for subscribers). The video is below and the media release is here. NBR has a review, as do Stuff and the NZ Herald. 
  2. Enrolment Caps Student concern is rising about several universities bringing forward tighter admission restrictions, while the ODT also has a story on extra undergrad courses caps at the University of Otago. Anyone would think that the Budget was close by…
  3. Growing Fees Student Choice has put up a release about high student service fee increases at universities and VSM.
  4. Infratrain Radio NZ has a small piece in Infratrain’s Maori trade training scheme.
  5. Study 0, Work 1 I’ve mentioned a Tauranga student on Friday who was out with a sign looking for work, yesterday when he’d found a trial and now he’s given up study to work fulltime.
  6. Otago Design Undone The University of Otago’s Design Studies department will close – ODT and RNZ cover.
