If libraries remove computers, will anyone come?

That’s the headline of a story over at The Chronicle of Higher Education, with librarians concerned that removing information commons (in the era of mobile computing and iPads) will slash the number of students coming to the library. Well, computers were added to boost traffic to libraries, so dropping them would naturally have an effect. But libraries are centrally located with good access and existing foot traffic (and close to food), which is why computer labs were put there, so a new use will draw upon those advantages. Librarians shouldn’t be too worried.

And anyway, will a mobile computing revolution be just around the corner? I was a student rep on Victoria University’s IT Committee in 1993-4, when I argued against the abolition of computer labs (we won). The IT people felt that laptops were coming down in price and the University could require students to buy them – 15 years on there are more laptops around campus, but also a lot more desktop computers. And where were the students with laptops going to sit? The library!

a much more interesting question (to be ventured in ten years) Dave will be “if the university removed the lecturers would anyone notice?”

At one of our sub-sites we have an 11 university-linked computer room for 550 residents. It is rarely at full capacity. I’ve just gone through a thorough review of how we can further support student achievement and more computers is not on the agenda. Five years ago it may have been different. On the other hand we are increasing the spaces for study and student/ tutorial interaction. Some students find it easy to study in their rooms and some prefer to keep their rooms as a non-study space. I think there is still a strong demand for libraries as they continue to evolve and for librarians as they facilitate the use library resources and the resources libraries access.

Perhaps a guest post from a librarian might be in order.

As Darel and I are both married to librarians, we should be able to find a guest post author! Would be a good idea to seek guest posts on a range of academic and functional issues though.
