News 26/4 – “Bomb” from Otago Poly

  1. Otago Poly “Bomb” An Otago Polytechnic art student sparked a bomb scare on Friday on Dunedin’s motorway, a day after there was a realistic-looking fake bomb left at Dunedin airport. The student had taped five cans together, modified to be pinhole cameras, and attached them to a motorway bridge. Police may press charges.
  2. Philanthropy Last week Steven Joyce suggested that universities grow their income through philanthropy and export education. Sharn Riggs of the TEU objected, asking how an institution like Tairawhiti would prosper in that environment. Arthritis New Zealand got upset at the potential extra competition from universities.
  3. Massey Restructuring Ian Warrington, Palmerston North regional chief executive for Massey University, is retiring as part of a restructuring.
  4. Otago Design Design studies looks likely to be reduced at the University of Otago, with the key department cut.
  5. TWOA Inspiration Tomorrow Te Wananga O Aotearoa celebrates the 25th anniversary of the marae that inspired the establshment of the wananga. Incidentally, TWOA just held a graduation in Timaru with 51 students, illustrating their broad reach now.
  6. VSM Debate The NZ Herald had a detailed article on Saturday about the voluntary student membership bill, with a focus on the politics of students’ associations, and their alumni (I’m one too).
