News 20/4 – Loans and Fees the Key, Plus Grid Girls
April 20th 2010 at 8:07am, By Dave Guerin
- Student Loans and Fees There have been many stories following up on Steven Joyce’s announcements on TV on Sunday about student loans and fees (see yesterday’s news post for details)
- John Key was on Breakfast (at 4:33 on) talking about student loans and the key points are in this story, including that students should respect the taxpayers’ contribution to their study – you should read this one;
- John Key also spoke to reporters later in the days and this NZPA story has a great summary, with a bigger focus on fees – you can get an audio file of the press conference at Scoop;
- NZUSA says Key’s attacks are ill-informed;
- The NZ Medical Students’ Assn puts up a mild-mannered critique of higher medical students’ fees (as an aside, there will be 20 more medical students funded at Otago next year);
- Young Labour is ”reeling” – it is unfortunate that the Young Labour spokesperson states that he does “at least sixteen hour weeks” – are we supposed to be impressed that he works 2 days a week to fund his studies?;
- The Press has a good story, going beyond the press releases, and has new comments from Steven Joyce and a couple of VCs besides NZUSA – you should read this one;
- Blogger Tumeke thinks its all slash and burn; and
- but the NZ Herald supports the student loan changes in an editorial;
- Grid Girls Wintec fashion students ran a fashion show in conjunction with the V8races in Hamilton at the weekend.
- Otago Midwifery The ODT has a good story on midwifery offered by Otago Polytechnic in the North Island – we covered similar issues here a couple of months back.
- Waikato 2nd - in World Congrats to the University of Waikato team that came second in a business case competition in Switzerland, while Waikato students are currently leading in a NZ business case league.
- Taranaki ACE If this Taranaki Daily News story was a business case, it would be of a failing business – it is hard to fathom how disorganised the ACE provider appears in this story.

Your comment on the Young Labour person (who I don’t know) is a bit naughty. He’s not asking we be impressed he works as well as studies. He’s making the point that he does respect what he gets from the taxpayer because he works to supplement his income.
Actually, the only reason I clicked through is because my first skim was that he was studying 16 hours a week which I thought was a bit weak so no I’m not in the business of defending YL, but since I bothered to read it . . .
The full quote is: A student at the University of Auckland, Durbin is in his fourth year of tertiary study as he undertakes his Honours year in Media Studies. As an Undergraduate student, Durbin worked at least sixteen hour weeks for minimum wage to supplement his $160 living allowance and

If you keep on reading Darel, it seems that his 16 hour week is supposed to be impressive – he goes on to talk of juggling two careers. I just don’t think that working 16 hours a week is that interesting for a media release. But I could be wrong – try to find another outlet that has mentioned the media release.
But anyway, we should talk more rather than just thru this comments section!
