News 9/4 – Peruvian President and Unitec Bridges

April 9th 2010 at 9:12am, By Dave Guerin

  1. Fujimori & Lincoln Lincoln University may revoke the honorary doctorate awarded to ex-President of Peru Alberto Fujimori, after the recipient was convicted of organising massacres by military death squads when in office – one massace involved nine students and a professor from a university. VC Roger Field seemed to suggest that the University had been encouraged by others, presumably the government, to award the doctorate (see first link), but the decision was still made by the University. Personally, I think it’s a bit silly when universities give honorary doctorates when foreign dignitiaries flit into the country, because almost invariably there is no prior relationship to the university – it’s a mix of PR and stargazing for the university.
  2. Bridge to Unitec Unitec CEO Rick Ede is keen on building a bridge to help improve access to students and local residents to the main Unitec campus.
