News 31 Mar – Closed Entry, Marc Ellis and ITP Councils

- Rod’s Closing the Doors Rod Carr, University of Canterbury VC, is calling for tighter entry to university again, with former MP Liz Gordon taking the opposite view. David Choat wrote a post for ED Blog about Rod’s last foray here.
- G-G Gets it Easy The Governor-General, Anand Satanyand, has had it easy with his visit to the University of Otago. Rather than being the one giving the speeches, he’s gone down to sit in on two lectures by a guest lecturer.
- Marc Ellis Running a Student Pub? The Gardens Tavern (The Gardies) in Dunedin may close and several students asked Marc Ellis for advice about how to keep it going. He replied and might even put a team together to buy it. But would he get licensing approval?
- Equity Funding The Government has confirmed that there will be no change to equity funding, in response to TEU claims that it was under threat. No-one other than TEU has mentioned the issue up until now, to my knowledge, so I’m not sure what the problem was in the first place.
- Uni Games Close The Uni Games will start in Invercargill at the weekend and numbers are going well.
- ITP Councils Next Week? The ODT reports that Ministerial appointees to ITP councils will not be announced until at least next week. They also cover Otago Poly council changes. Meanwhile The Waikato Times reports that Wintec’s chairperson should be safe, going by hints from the Minister.
