News 22 Mar – Steven Joyce, Tim Shadbolt & Paul Wilson

Paul Wilson Honoured Paul Wilson, Tai Poutini Polytechnic CEO, has been awarded the prestigious Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand 2010 Fulton-Downer Gold Medal. He’s done a lot for engineering and he’s a good operator, so congrats Paul – that’s him at left.
- Science Funding The ODT wrote an editorial about science issues on Saturday, arguing for more money for the area. The writer seems to have got a bit mixed up, suggesting that CRIs have only recently become companies and had to deliver dividends, whereas that was part of the model for many years.
- Massey Changes Massey University is rebranding five existing centres into a Department of Public Health, to open in Wellington on Wednesday (which seems like a good time to mention that I’m open to any and all cocktail party invitations).
- Minister of Everything Steven Joyce was interviewed on TV3′s new Saturday morning politics show. The full transcript is available, as is the video (in a review of the show, John Armstrong of the NZ Herald noted that the lowlight was getting bogged down in polytechnic funding). Steven Joyce was also profiled in the NZ Herald. Maryan Street of Labour argues that Steven Joyce would have been out of university under proposed performance-related student loans, given his poor first year performance. This is OK politicking, but bad policy – should all policy be based on what it was like “when I was a kid”. We’d all be walking 20 miles to school in the snow
- Shadbolt in Uni Games Tim Shadbolt, Mayor of Invercargill, will be competing in the Uni Games being held in Invercargill in April, He’s a SIT2LRN student and will be part of a lawn bowls pair.
- From WITT to Canterbury Ex WITT-Commissioner Murray Strong is apprently being considered to be a commissioner for the Canterbury regional council (ECan). I remember Murray speaking at a polytechnic conference on how CEOs treat Councils and he put up a photo of mushrooms (ie keep them in the dark and feed them…). It was very amusing and no-one got too offended.
- Gisborne PTE Does Well Gisborne Development Inc (a PTE) has had a great write-up of their annual report in The Gisborne Herald. It surprises me that more PTEs don’t take the opportunity to make some sort of annual report – while most are private companies or trusts without public reporting requirements, it’s a good opportunity to get some profile and share some successes. I’m happy for this PTE anyway, as I have a lot of time for their manager, Chris Hatwell – the second good bloke for this post!

That is a good idea regarding annual reports. As a sector we are not good at promoting ourselves and are in danger of being locked into the “second chance education” box.
Amused that the article refers to the 2009 “audit”. Will “evaluations” ever catch on? Especially as Audits were good marketing material for those who had good ones.
